REDUX DVD
Aaron Haynes's Avatar
Plot Summary:
A DVD collection, containing the original version of REDUX, an extended cut with commentary from both directors, promo images, artwork, parodies, and various odds and ends.

Redux DVD Edition
Aaron Haynes and Gorosaurus

Created over the last two months of 2004 and released at the end of the Winter Film Fest, on January 8, 2005.
Everything is as it was on that release (though Ramza's "soundtrack" has been trimmed out for space as well as a few other things).
I've also added a few scans of pages I used to jot down story ideas, a loose plot framework, coordinate information, and one storyboard, for the window sequence, which gave me enough frustration in plotting it that I had to draw it out -Aaron

Aaron: The Extended version of REDUX was some of the easiest animating and editing I've ever done, because unlike the first time around, there wasn't such an ambitious, epic narrative riding on what we did. There was still a deadline, but we weren't spreading ourselves thin trying to shape and polish three entire acts. We were free to expand on the parts of the film that were most interesting to us.

REDUX is such an easy movie to create an extended cut for, because the edges of its canvas unfold at will just by wondering what's happening offscreen. Part of the payoff of creating and juggling so many storylines at once, especially in Acts I and II, is that at any point you can ask "what's this character doing at this time?" or "what else might've been happening in this scene?" We could've kept going on this for months, just retooling and expanding on it, revealing more of the world and its rules happening just off the edge of the 3DMM workspace.

Goro:
This became the very first interactive DVD released on Youtube. Video annotations allow users to link between movies on Youtube, and I felt that this was a perfect opportunity to bring REDUX to a larger audience.

Recording and converting every file in relation to REDUX DVD (in upwards of 10-15 times to perfect certain framerates) really brought certain aspects of the movie to light for me. Memories of creating scenes and the symbolism behind some flushed back to me. Certain areas of the Original cut still make me cringe with then-cut corners, yet I can still appreciate it as both an achievement and a more concise story. I found out that my favorite parts were not those scenes that took entire weeks to construct, but rather those where the music and the visuals worked together to bring certain feelings to the forefront. I would recommend that you watch the Original Cut of REDUX once again as it nears its fifth year. It is hard to appreciate the nuances of the Extended Edition without that sort of renewed familiarity.

And just as before, we both made this movie as a tribute to some of the most talented directors in the community's history, as well as to those characters and concepts they previously explored. We certainly appreciate every comment, new and old, and are anxious to hear just what you got out of REDUX.

Through better compression, I've managed to reduce the .zip download from 55mb to just over 40. Go me!

Anyways, three or four days of invisible thread has made this slide down the front page, so consider this a BUMP.

To be honest, i have not seen this until now. Very Nice. Not sure i understood the main story line, but for its time the visuals were to die for. How you make those HMCs so complex and make them move so fluidly (well not quite ) is really beyond me, many hours must have been put into this. The best 20mins of my day. Well done Mr Haynes and Mr Gorosaur, a true classic!

I don't think I ever saw the extended version when this was released the first time, so this was a pleasant surprise. I was very happy to see that the fight between Godzilla and the demon had been extended. In the original it just looked like they were intimidating each other, whereas now they are actually fighting, and it really looks spectacular. Fantastic work. This is also the first time I have listened through the commentary on a 3DMM film (Liquid Sunshine next. Has anyone else done that?). It was a lot of fun listening to you guys, people should do that more often.

I wouldn't call it the revolution I recall certain people made it out to be back when it was released. It pretty much continues in the same tradition as The Showdown and Rebirth of 3DMM, which also was the point, and you did a superb job at that. In fact, it is probably the best of its kind, and one of the best homages to 3DMM I can think of - possibly only beaten by Pamela. It is arguably also an important film, seeing as it kind of sparked a debate concerning the use of expansions. The ending pretty much says it all: the community is going to see a lot more winters if we just take advantage of the utilities we have at our hands.

Also, thanks for providing a link for the soundtrack
