Re-released as part of the 3DMM Preservation Project.

This seemed like more of a really long trailer than a movie. 3.5 fish.

I had never watched this before, but I'm glad I did now. The director put way too much effort into this for it to just be forgotten.

Sergon's scenery design style is really interesting, especially in the beginning, with the stretched I's for walls and stuff. It's kind of strange that the is portraying in a somewhat positive light what appears to be dictators as well as suicide bombing, but I suppose that side of the story does deserve to be shown sometimes, and besides, we don't know whether "the King" was just or unjust, as well we don't know the intentions of the invaders. Still, I feel like the ambiguity was more because the director wasn't quite sure what he was doing, but wanted to make serious drama nevertheless.

It reminds me of Powerplay in a lot of ways, especially in the scenery, however this is obviously a lot more serious in tone. Usually serious 3dmm movies come across really goofy, but I think it works pretty well here.

Looks to me like a few pieces of the scenery were meant to have been set to "Spin Letters", the guns at 1:55 particularly. And maybe the walls in the opening shot. I didn't think something like that could bug out though.

Damn, that was good. I think this might be Sergon's best movie. Espirit De Corps was smoother, but this was a lot more interesting, despite some weird choices (like the music cutting out during the bridge attack, or the random "Meanwhile..." tag). The voice quality was pretty bad, but the characters emote, at least, which was nice. It's directed really well, we get a good sense of the city, the battles, the isolation in his room. There's something about this that feels unique in 3DMM.

I totally disagree about this feeling like a trailer or the ambiguity reflecting a lack of writing skill. The details don't really matter, cause the story is about his god-complex as a tyrant, and his doubts about the people and what they deserve. The movie makes it pretty clear he's a dictator, and the invading force is there to depose him. However, the ending is kind of unclear, because he could be thinking of the bombing as for his people, or lashing out against the invading force as this final narcissistic act. We don't know what they're there to do or what he's after. So you kinda have a point. But thinking about those variables, and wondering if they make any moral difference, is pretty interesting, so the vague characterization doesn't bother me much. Whether they meant to or not, they made something that's interesting to think about.

I don't think they were showing sympathy for him, btw. I didn't get any sense of the movie having an opinion about it.

So yeah, I really liked this.

Edit: I referred to "they" above because I assumed this was Sergon and Ben Fortier working as a director/writer team like with EDC. Turns out it was just Sergon. Nice work.

On second though, I agree with you. It does seem that the director's portraying these things in a non-judgmental way; it's just hard for me to think of a 3dmm movie, made by a person who I assume was a teenager at the time, as being that complex.

Reviewed. I thought this was great, and can't believe I hadn't even so much as heard of it before. Whose movie of the week choice was this?

Mine. I was poking through 3DMMStudio's archive when I came across it and had a sudden rush of "OH I remember this". Watching through it again I was amazed by how well it stood up. The way the shadows were done were a neat take on how to do them, the cinematography and editing were incredible, and it handles its story pretty well.

I recall it had a bit of buzz for a while then slipped through the cracks of the board completely.

The whole film seems to run really smoothly. I'd forgotten how good that title sequence was.

Wow that was great. Can't believe I'd never seen, let alone HEARD, of this one.

This was incredibly well directed. The shot with the missile and bottle and unf, UNF. There were so many angles and shots that were just great. Shadows? SHADOWS? Awesome.

The ending was sweet too. I like that it wasn't overly saturated with political or philosophical overtones. It was exactly what it needed to be. Fantastic!

This is a great example of why the Preservation Project is so great... we all get to see these brilliant movies lovely.

This is a very well-done piece. The dialogue is written well and the animation is very nice. Good job Sergon!

Has everyone here really forgotten what 2003 was like? This was some pretty thinly veiled stuff for the time that it came out in, and these two were already known/ hated on here for being hysterical.
To put it extremely, saying anything positive about this movie is like saying anything positive about Birth Of A Nation.

Edit: Wow, I can't believe how nice I was back in the original thread. I guess I've grown to dislike it.

Well, at the time this came out the war in Iraq had only just got into it's full swing and every young impressionable flag waving 3dmmer with a keyboard felt the need to get their crazy on. Sergon, Ben, and some other friend of their's were among the crazy few and for memory they left in the usual fit of crying, or at least minimised their posting to get this and Espirt Des Corps out.
Anyway, like I said it was pretty thinly veiled stuff and after watching it enough times it just kinda felt like I was seeing the world through the eyes of a psychopath, except they weren't really psychopaths just naive/ immature teenagers who didn't know much about anything. So yeah, I watch this now and all I get is 'kids movie'.
Disagreeing with the political slant also doesn't do much for my enjoyment.

I don't really think this has anything to do with Iraq at all. The King is portrayed pretty sympathetically. Are you implying the THE KING = SADDAM or something?

Haven't seen this in fucking forever. Cool! As campy as 3DMM is, I always was impressed with Sergon's use of shadow, extreme angles, and camera movement. Really brilliant stuff.

Adam, go fuck yourself.

That was in my head too. I think the scenery design is similar to Powerplay's, maybe that's it?
