Speed Racer

Went in not really knowing what to expect story-wise, but I didn't care. I was there for the effects. I became interested in it once the creators talked about their intention to make a live-action cartoon, with foreground elements noticeably separate from the background etc. It worked really well, everything was an immense visual delight.

Everything else about the movie was kinda average to just above. I don't know anything about Mach Go Go, but the theme song managed to feel familiar, and the film evoked a strong sense of nostalgia from Saturday morning kids cartoons, which was nice.

So yeah, if you're a fan of interesting visual styles (and Speed Racer's is reason enough for a viewing) or a nostalgia junkie, go see it.

Anyone else interested/seen it?

EDIT - http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/spee...ml?showVideo=1
First seven minutes there. Gives you a good idea of the live-action cartoon look of the film.

Going to see a movie on the basis of visuals is kinda dumb.

Why? It's a visual medium.

It is shit. Just read the reviews. It's just shit that's been polished to be really neat to look at.

Okay I cannot tell if it will be crap or not. To me, from the previews, it looks like a colorful silly camp-fest. The negative reviews I read are all "NO WTF IS THIS." I think they were expecting the film to take itself seriously? I dunno.

It looks pretty terrible... In that video how in the hell is he winning be flying off the track like it's a damned half pipe? It doesn't seem like the most effective way to race.

On another note, I've read that they actually made an 1800hp replica of the Mach 5 (3?) and it's going to be in GT5.

Yeah, you're missing the point. It's trying to be a cartoon. None of the physics make sense.

Like I said, you see it for the visual style and nostalgia. See, the reviews I read agreed with that point and put it into the 3/5 category or similar. I'm not going to claim it is a great film or anything, but it looks so unique it is worth seeing anyhow. Kinda like why people play Killer 7 or No More Heroes.

I thought it looked visually incredible from the adverts so I'd probably go and see it for just that reason alone. I expect the actual story to be pretty average.

I came back from watching it yesterday. Managed to get a HD screening. My GOD, this movie is colourful. There was this one scene where a girl is leaning over and you see the sky behind her. Everytime it flicked to that, the colours were so bright, it was almost blinding.

Like Tom Breed said, you can't take this movie seriously. It IS a kids movie. The visual effects were pretty instense, too. I think if you go in accepting the fact that it's for kids, then you'll enjoy it a lot more.

I liked it a whole bunch. At the end of the cross-country race where he hopped out and mirrored the opening of the cartoon I was smiling ear-to-ear.

Hahaha, I think I was the only one in the cinema who got that. There weren't a lot of people at the screening i attended.

I feel I'm the only one who thinks this looks like a lot of fun. Too bad it doesn't premiere here before the 20th of June.

I loved it. I was the only person in the theater, which was lovely. I was psyched about it since the announcement of it being made cuz I've been a huge Speed Racer nerd since I was about 6. I didn't even think of it as a kid's movie...it was just really well done, and something everyone could enjoy. Racing scenes were so intense, and the movie was overall just a lot of fun. One of the best I've seen so far this year...liked it a bit more than Iron Man.

They were talking about the garbage reboot. Don't bump dead threads unless you got a good reason.
