Plantdings
Aaron Haynes's Avatar
Description:
Features two styles of supplemental plant models: flat plane configurations for transparent leaf textures, and single models as well as various clusters of clovers, grass, flowers, and mushrooms.

This was originally going to include several new tree models, but I decided to cut them and put in five styles and three group configurations of mushrooms instead. The trees will appear in another font coming up soon, but by specializing this one, I was able to refine the plant-plane clusters to match potential needs much better.

The way these work, if you've never used this technique before, is very simple, but depends very much on the textures you use rather than the models themselves. "a" through "s" are various clusters of flat, two-sided planes which each map a whole texture on them once. If you use an image of a leaf or cluster of leaves with transparency around the outside, these models will display that in a configuration that appears to be 3D (or close enough).

Here's an example of the kind of texture that's effective with these models. It's the only one I bothered to make in order to text them, and certainly not the best possible one, but you or someone else can easily make more with a little effort. Click the image to download the one I used.

Similarly, the "a", "b", and ">" models are intersected polygons, a technique game developers use to display trees. You may notice (especially in first- and second-gen FPSes) that trees and plants don't look the same as other 3D models in-game, or rotate to always face the camera in a strange way. This is the most efficient way to do plants in real-time, it saves a tremendous amount of polygons and thus framerate. You'll need a symmetrical transparent texture for these:

Finally, the multi-piece models begin at "G" with the flower stem and continue on all the way through the `~!@#$%^&*()-_=+[{]}\|;:'",<.>/? keys. If you animate any one object that's part of a group, you can copy and paste it on frame one and change it to another member of that group and it will already be in place and animate along the same path. The groups are:

GHK - Low-poly Flower
IJK - High-poly Flower
LMN - Flower Field 1
OPQ - Flower Field 2
RST - Flower Field 3
UVW - Flower Field 4
XYZ - Flower Field 5
`~! - Mushroom 1
@#$ - Mushroom 2
%^& - Mushroom 3
*() - Mushroom 4
-_= - Mushroom 5
[{] - Mushroom Group 1
}\| - Mushroom Group 2
;:' - Mushroom Group 3
"/? - Mushroom 6

I didn't do as many screenshots for this one because it takes a lot more work to show off the unique facets of this font vs. the relative ease of FPVdings, and I'm exhausted from working on this all day. Feel free to post your own (in fact, please do!).

Holy hell this is great, you must be a mind reader or something because I was going to dedicate today to do nothing but download and convert plant models(as well as other small objects) for my movie. Now I think I'll go enjoy a nice lemonade at the park.

10/10

Hahah, not so fast, this is mostly scattered outside-grounds stuff. More unique houseplants and trees are coming in a future font.

Now, that's just great.

We could add more realism to wilderness highway scenes with this scenery.

Here is a crude illistration of a vehicle randomization scene:

It would be nice if we had an easy way to put scenery in long traffic scenes.

Glad you like. Out of curiosity, why are you so fixated on vehicle randomization?

Please don't make a ten-minute movie about a traffic jam. I'm begging you. I want to nip this one in the bud ahead of time.

Great work as always Aaron! You've been a God recently, what with Big Movie, this font and some mod or other I liked. Nice one!

Hahahaha! This is just taking the piss now. You've invaded a non-vehicle-related thread and managed to infect it with your highway OCD. Just stop! PLEASE!?

But now I want to download your stuff which is all in .vxp format and none of these files work in my 3DMM! What am I doing wrong, can somebody explain me? All other files worked great... Thanks in advance
