Richard Bevis may not always succeed in conveying his message on the screen, but you got to hand it to him for trying to do something different. The Pool is no exception, falling nicely into his line of other music-driven pieces. I must admit that the poster had me thinking that this would be a good, old-fashioned psychological thriller. Not saying I was disappointed or anything, it was just a bit funny how the movie turned out to be nothing like that at all.
The Pool is built around the simple premise of a man running to rescue a woman from drowning, while constantly going through different scenarios of troubles he encounters on his way. The obstacles he had to go through seemed ridiculously over-the-top at times (the lightning comes to mind), unless he was just the unluckiest guy ever. It probably made the movie a lot funnier than Bevis had intended in the first place. But for all it is worth, I thought the ending was very cute. While the story itself is not likely to win any awards, I thought it was surprisingly well executed. A couple of shots could safely have been slowed down a bit, to establish a more lasting effect, but other than that the pacing was superbly taken care of. The constantly moving camera made me stressful, but with a view to the film’s premise, that was probably exactly what Bevis was aiming for. Good job there! One problem I have had with several of Bevis' movies is that they very often are visually more interesting than their concepts, which is rarely a good sign. This was also the case with The Pool. Having said that, The Pool really is visually impressive. Bevis has an eye for great angles, constantly keeping our interest at a maximum. Some of the scenes are also brilliantly constructed, especially the buildings shots. There were a few distracting glitches that should have been fixed prior to its release, with the crosshatching and the rotating camera sticking out in particular. That is not enough to prevent The Pool from looking absolutely beautiful though. Bottom line, what I really miss to see is that one truly great idea being carried out, as Bevis has already proven that he can do the execution. The Pool is not by any means a bad movie, but I have yet to see Bevis fully live up to his potential – but when he does, I am sure he will blow us all away. 7/10 Originally posted on www.3dmmspotlight.tk |
