After some short hype and a few trailers Buzvonlurt finally releases The World Around Igby, a comedy/drama that falls short of achieving mediocrity in almost every category. The movie begins with a monologue by the main character Igby whose parents held him in on February 28th so he could be born on the 29th so they only have to celebrate his birthday once every four years. This shows some hatred towards his parents in some pretty good voice acting by Tuna but a lot of the effect for this scene is lost in the pacing of the scenes, some of what are repeated two or three times causing a slight annoyance.
We are then introduced to Igby's friend, who has HIV but is willing not to have sex with his girlfriend because he loves her too much. This scene worked decently but could have been better. Igby's other dealings, especially with the drug dealer, moved too quickly and left the viewer with a 'wtf?' feeling a lot of the time. One thing that Buz can't do is pace a movie, and this is a prime example. A lot of the movie leaves the audience confused, mostly because it is poorly explained. This itself could be considered the fault of both the director and the writer. The death of Igby's father, though directed well just doesn't make any sense because it seems like Igby just walks in and gets pissed at his father for no reason and kills him. That's it. Also the confrontation with the drug dealer and the tire iron thing was quite confusing as well. Scenery and animation aren't terrible but are incredibly rushed. A lot of it is pretty sloppy and doesn't look like any time was really put into them. Jon Barton's scenes were really good but aside from that there's nothing new to show. Music was the only thing that kept this movie together. Buz has a really good ear for music in places and it shows. Overall this movie was really rushed and could've used another month or two to improve on a lot of the areas it was lacking in. Sorry Buz but I know you can do a lot better. 5/10 |
