A family of squirrels is separated when a group of hunters invade their forest home. However the elder of the family is forced to tell his grandchildren a tragic story of the destruction of King Gladamire and his empire...

This review contains minor spoilers.

After seeing the impressive Bodily Functions, I was led to watch N.U.T.S, and sure enough, I could spend quite a few paragraphs talking about their similarities. But I won't. Instead I'll just cram one very similar feature into one paragraph and then go on to talk about what makes N.U.T.S unique and special. Let's start then. With Bodily Functions, you had those cute red blood cells, remember? Well, in N.U.T.S, you have the animal version: squirrels. Squirrels? Yes, squirrels. And they look damn cute too. Just like Bodily Functions, the hand-made characters in N.U.T.S are extremely cute, and yet again you sympathise them when things go wrong, and smile with them when things are looking up.

But what makes N.U.T.S different to Bodily Functions, and a lot of other movies, is the way the story is told. We see some pretty heartless things in N.U.T.S, mixed with so many light-hearted and cute scenes, which are helped with the simplicity of the hand-made characters and cartoon-looking scenery. This is rarely seen on 3DMM, as here we have two huge contrasts on opposite ends of the scale. There are quite a few movies which have made a lot of use of mixing emotions, but bar one, maybe two, rare exceptions, none can boast that their movie can be this graphic and touching at the same time. Put simply, its painful scenes are what makes this movie different. And if that is not enough, on top of all that, we get plenty of small hints that this movie is the start of an epic, teasing viewers along with questions unanswered.

Technically, the furry movie is quite stunning, even more so when you consider that this was made years ago. It is not only the hand-made characters that impressed, but also the camera angles, sound effects and music. N.U.T.S excels here, and this definitely contributes to the effectiveness of the movie.

And N.U.T.S really is effective. Who knew dogs can be so heartless? Who knew that we could be so cold-hearted? Who knew that these poor squirrels could be affected so badly by the following events shown in this movie? Exaggerated, maybe, but touching nonetheless. And these questions bring me on to my next point. Another reason why the story works is that we, as humans, can associate with, and it is something that we do: hunting. You see many debates about fox-hunting and many related topics, and N.U.T.S gives us an insight to how the victims are feeling, how they are full with pain and anger, and how brutally they can be killed. It certainly softens up the majority of watchers, especially those who are against hunting in general, no matter how weak or strong they feel about it. Intentional or not, N.U.T.S is also well-made and unique because of this.

Inevitably, not everyone will be sympathising with these squirrels. Not everyone is like me, and we all know that I am a sucker when it comes to cute characters. Even if you hate small, furry mammals, you should still check it out. There are many elements that could still surprise you, and there are even a few amusing moments chipped in. And if these things still does not satisfy you, and you really do think mammals are the scum of the Earth (especially squirrels) I suppose you will enjoy seeing furry animals being killed. But I'd rather not go there. I liked N.U.T.S because of its cuteness, its simple hand-made characters, its way of begging for sympathy, its music and sound effects, and its relation to real life, as well as many other things, and there is a good chance you will be entertained too by this movie. N.U.T.S arguably opens up your eyes so effectively to the outside world, as the cold, devastating events unfold, as you sit there in your chair, motionless with grief. This movie was a huge achievement, and I have no doubt that Redwampa deserves a lot of credit for this.
