Sgt. Steve
by Zaps
Go to movie
2001, Movie, Comedy, Directed by Jason Ruiz
The story of a mentally retarded talk show drill seargent and his bizarre life involving romance, violence, manipulation, and 'Saved by the Bell' episodes.

This is a mixed bag. At times, Sgt. Steve made me crack up, but at others, I sat there wondering if the supposed joke was meant to be funny. Luckily, the majority of the jokes were hilarious. There are not many comedies out there that have made me laugh as many times as this, and this really is special. Even the opening and ending credits had me in fits of laughter, and from the word 'go', I had a gut feeling that Sgt. Steve was going to deliver big-time. And it did.

Unlike comedies such as Humorville or Skitzophrenia, Sgt. Steve keeps the same characters the whole way through, and the characters do work. My personal favourite is Mr. WeeWee, and every time he comes up in the movie, whether if he is a doctor, driving teacher or reverend, he somehow always manages to make me laugh out loud. He's not the only one though, there are many others who have amusing and entertaining characters. It's great, every single character, with the exception of one, the obvious 'baddie', is likeable, and warming up to all these characters really does brighten Sgt. Steve up and gets you into the mood of laughing.

My main gripe with this, well, it's a part of the movie which I didn't particularly like, is that I felt that The Jason Show, near the start of the movie, dragged on for way too long. Despite having it's hilarious moments (the most memorable line being: "I'm a parachute!"), I was worried at this point that Sgt. Steve was one of those overrated comedies, basing it on this section of the movie. Fortunately, I was just being paranoid, and if you do download and watch it, and if you do get slightly bored by The Jason Show, don't be tempted to click on the 'Stop' button, Sgt. Steve does pick up. Fast. Surprisingly though, one thing that worked was the basic and clichéd story. It is about the life of Sgt. Steve, and how his life changes when he meets a particular girl. Admittedly, I found the pairing sweet, and at times, I did go 'aww'. I was feeling sympathy for the couple, and Sgt. Steve exploited this very well, making it the more amusing; the petting zoo scene in particular.

'Mature' jokes do crop up in Sgt. Steve (although they are fairly sparse), and so if you find these off-putting, you should probably avoid this. But bear in mind, you are missing a pretty damn funny comedy. And that's about it really, Sgt. Steve is a wonderful, well-put together and hilarious movie, and it is one to check out if you haven't done so already. Great voices all-round livens up the movie, and from the jolly Buddy to Sgt. Steve himself, to the silly Mr. WeeWee, each distinctive character contributes to make Sgt. Steve an enjoyable, humourous movie.
