This review contains minor spoilers.
Have you ever made a decision, which turned out to be a mistake, and you wished that you could take it all back? Maybe you have ended up apologising to someone, perhaps bought your friend a gift to say sorry, or tried to redeem yourself in some other way. Well, Mistake is an extremely short, but deep movie which covers this to some extent. In fact, it looks to the extreme. This is not any small mistake, this is a major life-changing one. Despite its extremity, this is something we can all associate with, and by the end of Mistake, I had to gather my thoughts and think about these dramatic, yet touching, scenes. Mistake is another creepy drama from Mike Storch, and this, like all others, does not fail to impress. This time, it is about a man who tries to sort out his 'mistake' with devastating decisions, and a lot of sympathy goes out to the victims of his disturbing and heartless actions. The atmosphere is nicely set, with a dark, cold feeling, and it is helped with some chilling music and some darkly-chosen scenery. The main thing, which makes 'Mistake' what it is, is the occasional appearance of text which, with the mood darkened by the black backgrounds, lets us know what the man is thinking. It is as if we have the ability to read his troubled mind, and I watched with eager to see what he will do. Like Maybe Next Year, the director knows what he is doing, and he maintains the dark mood of the drama really well. One thing that confused me though was the ending. It felt like the movie was forced to come to an end, to keep the movie as short as it is, and it does not appear that the director has given as much thought as he did in directing the rest of the movie. I could not get my head round the rather sudden conclusion to this, and I suppose I was slightly let down here. But if you like Mike Storch dramas, such as the short Maybe Next Year and the deservedly praised Gnomes, you should definitely check this out. Mistake is perhaps not as good as his other stuff, but it is still tense, dramatic, and nearly everything a short drama should be. Score: 73/100 |
