Review contains some story related spoilers, and almost immediately gives away the big, shocking plot twist- BE YE WARNED.
I have found my new favorite movie of all time- and it stars a talking piece of flying toast who's on a quest to retrieve his stolen unibrow (which doubles as both a hand and a wallet) from Christopher Walken. Well, okay, maybe not quite my all-time favorite, but definately my favorite short. I'm serious, if you haven't watched this movie- do it now. If you refuse to do so, I will personally hunt you down and drop-kick you. Why is it so great? Read on my friend, I'll tell you... Well, normally I would put the storyline explanation here, but I pretty much covered it in the first sentence of the review. Honestly, the story doesn't really mean all that much here. Basically, Mean Bread gets his eyebrow ripped off (in what is possibly the most graphically violent scene in 3dmm history), and goes on a quest to get it back....after he cooks himself some bacon. This is one of those "turn off your brain and just go with it" type of movies (like the other great film fest movie, "5dmm"). I'm not gonna lie, what makes it great is it's utterly stupid sense of humour and incredible animation. In fact, if it actually tried to make any sense, I probably wouldn't like it as much. Speaking of the animation....just wow. This movie really showcases how v3dmm essentially turned 3d Movie Maker into an entirely different program. If I were to have watched this a few years ago, I wouldn't have even guessed that this was made in 3dmm- it honestly looks more like a "flash" movie. Of course, it's mostly so neat because of all the new sprites the directors imported into v3dmm, the actual animation is well-done, but nothing overly complicated. Still, how it all comes together is just incredible. There's a scene towards the end where Mean Bread blows away a pile of ashes...maybe I've just been away from 3dmm for too long...but it blew my freaking mind! Sound-wise, really well done. Extra points for using that hilarious Darth Vader "NOOOOOOoooooOOOooo!!!", which is my personal favorite sound byte of the year. There's also a pretty decent Christopher Walken impression- though I might of appreciated it more if I hadn't recently watched "Batman Returns" and therefore had exactly what his voice sounded like still fresh in my mind. When the music was used, it was chosen perfectly for sheer comedic value- "Price is Right" themes and all. I just...I love this movie. It makes me want to download all the film fest entries to see what I could have missed. More importantly though, if I were to go back in time and show my past self how far 3dmm has evolved over the years, this is the movie I would bring with me. Just watching this thing in action makes me excited about what this program is really capable of, it really gave me a healthy dose of motivation- which I really needed. Being as it had essentially no plot and was so short, I can only really give this movie as high as a 90% out of 100%, and even that's probably a bit too high, considering...BUT IT WAS JUST SO DAMN ENTERTAINING. Russ and Ferret, I command you, make a sequal! Everyone else- download this. As impossible as it may seem, talking bread has never been this entertaining. |
