First, I'll start off this review by saying that if you enjoy movies that make sense, run far away- now. "Venison Jelly" falls into that classification of movies where things like...say...a gatling gun appearing out of the floor for no reason whatsoever, or rocket propelled skate boards lying in the middle of the woods for equally unfathomable (OOoo, I like that word, hopefully it exists) reasons happen without any given explanation- and judging from what you've seen of the movie, no part of you expects one. Stranger 4 (remember the gnome shoot-out?) and JDR Revival (remember....the whole thing) both fall into this category. Just as those two movies have, Venison Jelly has conquered this style of movie making, and become one of the most entertaining and re-watchable movies of last year.
Typical of this style of movie, the plot in Venison Jelly isn't anything more than a shoestring used to tie all of the pointless shoot outs together. In short, the police chief's sandwich has been stolen, and the blame is placed squarely on secret agent 00Dee Boned. What follows is basically a 10 to 15 minute long chase scene, which has some of the best animation and directing I've seen in a long time. It might not be tied together by a story that will tug at your heart strings (unless you have a creepy thing for deer meat), but if you were expecting one from this movie even after just reading the title, you probably don't stand any chance of enjoying this anyway. But enough about "plot" and all that other stuff that doesn't really matter, let's get to what I love about this movie. Watching "Venison Jelly" is like watching a profesionally animated cartoon- it really looks that good. Not only is each camera angle perfectly chosen, but it's full of great little things too. For instance, the way the police chief's right eye bulges out when he says "IMMEDIATELY!". The little visual gags in this movie are just incredibly well done, and are actually much funnier than the humour found in the movie's dialouge (which is actually pretty weak in comparison, in my opinion...). Any problems you could find in this movie's animation would require an embarrasing amount of nitpicking, and you would probably have to watch the movie wearing "Clockwork Orange" style eyeball clamps to even see them, since if you blink you could miss them entirely. That said, I found one. You might not want to read it, it could make you never see the movie the same way again- when Dee Boned is trapped in the log, while he's talking his hands clip through it. Yeah, I'm dissapointed too. In short though, if this entire movie looked like something I would make with this program when I was 9, the badass shadowy 2d scene right near the end would make up for it ENTIRELY. As far as the sound category goes, everything here is done well. The music selections are great, even when they're incredibly obvious (like the bullet-time theme kicking in during a moment of slow motion shooting). Voice acting is done well by everyone involved, including Jaymond- who's starred in pretty much every movie since the start of 2003. He still hasn't voice acted in any movies I've had a part in making, I'm starting to feel left out . Anyway, top marks all around in the sound category. If I really had to think of a problem, I guess the police chief's voice sounds kind of distorted in a couple scenes. Once again- shameless nitpicking.Problems in this movie are few and far between. Some of the humour didn't really work for me, and the ending is hugely predictable- ah well, this movie still rocks! If you like your entertainment totally non-sensical and action packed with no thinking required, 00Dee Boned is IT. I was enjoying myself all the way through, and I'm sure that anyone else who enjoys pointless entertainment will agree that this is worthy of at least a 90% out of 100%. Easily worth the enormous amount of trouble I went through finding a working download link- and no, I'm not helpful enough to copy/paste that link here (honestly I completely forgot which one I used, I'm probably the very last person in the community to have not downloaded this movie anyway). |
