Making a 3dmm movie "full length" is kind of a big risk. Keeping people interested enough in these goofy looking, blocky characters to stare at their computer screens for upwards of an hour and a half requires that the movie be DAMN good....or maybe I'm totally wrong and I'm the only one who thinks this way thanks to a mild case of A.D.D. Whatever, anyway, the point is that 3dmm is basically a program meant for shorter movies, and creating a movie that is both long and interesting is not easy. However, Orcus proves with his second (released, anyway) movie that it can in fact be done. "Moderately Confused" is one really entertaining and genuinely funny comedy that almost makes you forget you're watching a movie made in 3dmm. The first one, "Slightly Confused", was good if not extremely memorable, but needless to say, MC leaves it completely in its dust. It's worth the 30 megs, even if your computer is 56 gay like mine. You might as well start the download now before you read the rest of the review. DO IT, OR I SWEAR I'LL MAKE IT EVEN LONGER AND TEN TIMES AS BORING (the review, of course).
MC picks up immediately where the first one left off- the bank robber from the first movie escapes from prison and instantly begins hatching a new scheme, this time to assemble a crack team of equally confused criminals and, with their help, steal the huge diamond being kept in the local museum. It's a great setup, and introduces a bunch of hilarious new characters. It's true that a lot of these characters have some kind of gimmick to make them more funny, but hey, who am I to complain about a gimmick if it works? We have a narcyleptic (somewhere, a spelling teacher is crying) get-away driver, a pimp who is less a character and more a hilarious collection of every black stereotype imaginable, a "l337 HaXX0r" (voiced hilariously by Dustin Guest), and of course- some guy with tourettes syndrome (who gets the loudest and cheapest laughs in the movie). There's also a team of cops who have some hilarious scenes, mostly because of one of them who talks only in 3dmm's pre-recorded lines, and is therefore the most annoying and horribly abused cop on the force (there's a scene where one of them just randomly throws a coffee mug at her face that had me rolling). With a cast of characters this good, it would be hard for MC to be anything other than hilarious- which it is. The humour really is the star of the show here, thankfully it's very good. With over 80 minutes of movie, obviously not every joke hits the mark, but honestly, I'd be hard pressed to think of one "bad" joke off the top of my head. Even the worst jokes will keep you smiling, even if you're not laughing out loud. This is one very well written movie, and it has some of the funniest lines, and scenes, in recent memory. The AIM scene alone has more laughs then a lot of 3dmm movies do in their entirety. Instead of being an evil puppy killing nazi and giving all of the funniest stuff away, I'll just let everyone download it and see for themselves. It's full of really smart writing, so all of you intellectuals out there won't feel like you're losing brain cells for laughing at it, while all of us easily amused people have plenty of stupid comedy here also which we can appreciate. EVERYONE WINS. * throws confetti * Well, obviously I can't wrap up this review until I get all of the dry technical crap out of the way. Let's see- the hand made scenes were really well done. An enormous step up from the simple stuff found in the first movie, and some of the animation here is just crazy. Sure, some of you more jaded types won't find anything really mind blowing....but....I dunno....I still suck so much my jaw drops every time I see a panning camera. If you need great animation to enjoy yourself, you will be appeased. The sound category is great in all possible ways. The music is well chosen, the voice acting is consistently excellent (although the bank robber and the one police chief guy sound a little too similiar), the sound effects all do their job...yep...great stuff! MC is one of the best comedies that I've seen with the program in a while. It does have a few minor snags- sometimes things will seem to be going a little slow, and early on there were a few five minute areas without any really great laughs. Overall, the movie is so good that any problems just feel like they came from pointless nitpicking. If you like to laugh, there's no reason to not download "Moderately Confused". So far, it's getting my vote for comedy of the year. I give it a 98% out of 100%. One of the best sequals for a 3dmm movie I can remember and easily one of the year's best. |
