Stranger 4 falls into one of the most fun to watch genres of 3dmm movies- the "P.A.M". I'm not talking about the infamous "Pointless Action Movie" genre, this movie definately has a point, I'm talking about the "Psychotic Action Movie". The JDR movies would be an example of this genre. They're action movies that have a plot (however shoestring-ish it may be) but absolutely anything can happen in them, and the insane tone of the movie tells you that no explanation is needed (or will ever be given to you). The result is a chaoticly entertaining movie that makes you laugh several times throughout just because so much of it is so completely unexpected. It's a movie that has a point, but reaches it through complete pointlessness. Confused yet? Yeah, so am I...so let's get to the technical stuff before this review loses all coherency.
Stranger 4's setup is simple- there's an evil sheriff terrorizing a town and "Stranger" has to go back in time to stop him (although even after going back in time the world seems suprisingly modern, with cars, motorcycles and modern weapons...go figure). What results is a movie that has Stranger running around town looking for this evil sheriff, and killing about as many people as the sheriff has along the way. The movie is directed like an extremely violent loony toons epispode, with equal part cartoony visual gags and incredibly well directed and extremely gory action sequences. Imagine Bugs bunny in "Desperado" and your half-way there. It sounds unusual to say the least, but it's great fun to watch. One thing that really stands out in this movie is the animation. It's incredible stuff- and it's backed up by some of the best directing I've ever seen for a 3d movie. The "terminator vision" scene alone is enough to give this movie perfect scores for animation, and it lasts about three seconds. Even the most simple things just look incredible here, like when the person in the bar hits Stranger with the pool cue and its end snaps off. It's so freaking simple but it looks so great it makes you want to rewind it and watch it again. It also features what has to be my favorite hand-made character ever right near the end. Behind all of this is a soundtrack that couldn't possibly be better chosen. Everything from the music that plays quietly in the background during the bar scene to the theme that kicks in when Stranger is limping over to his car fit perfectly, and the music that plays for the opening theme fits the movie ubelievably well. On top of all this you have some great voice acting by everyone (including Jaymond who's proven he can play anyone from a cybernetic female to a french mass murderer). If there are any problems in this movie, it's that the humour isn't quite as strong as the action. This movie has some funny moments (including a hilariously pointless guest appearance by Steven Seagal), but for me it seemed that for every joke that hit it's mark, there were about three that missed. No big deal, just a difference in humour I guess. Still, any minor flaws this movie may have are completely overshadowed by its entertainment value. One of the best movies from one of 3dmm's best years (2003). If you haven't seen this one, your missing out. I give it a 98% out of 100%. |
