Godzilla 1998: Platinum Edition
Hey Mikey Pictures's Avatar
Go to movie
This is the remake of the classic 3D movie Godzilla98 by Z-man. A Godzilla attack survivor and reporter scramble around the country to avoid a Godzilla attack at all costs. Before long it seems Godzilla isn't the only monster they need to worry about!

I've been a fan of Godzilla movies since I was five. I mean, is there anything more entertaining than an overweight dinosaur crushing cardboard buildings while waves of badly dubbed-over japanese people run and scream in horror? If there is, I don't wanna see it. "Godzilla 98" was (I'm pretty sure anyway...) the first Godzilla movie to be made in 3dmm. As crude as its animation was, back in the day it was incredible. If I were to nominate any 3dmm classics for a remake, this one would have been way up at the top of the list. Likewise, if I were to nominate someone who would have the job of remaking a classic 3dmm film, Gorosaurus would probably be #1 on the list. So, considering that this is a "Godzilla 98" remake by Gorosaurus, so far so good. The question is, did it actually turn out as good as it should have? The answer- further re-enforcing the belief that Gorosaurus can't release a movie that isn't entertaining- yes, it is.

The storyline is the typical fluff you'd expect from a Godzilla movie- Godzilla is back and he's making his way to another city that he's decided would look better as a pile of rubble. Also re-awakening is another monster...who's name I can't remember. He's the "skinny mofo" version of Godzilla. These two mosters inevitably meet up and have a showdown. Originally, Godzilla 98 used text boxes instead of spoken dialouge, but Goro has taken it upon himself to voice every single character in the movie. The voices are obviously nothing to be taken seriously- and they're completely hilarious! Goro's extremely over-the-top voices are almost reason enough to download this by themselves, if you just want a laugh (my apologies to Goro if he actually put his heart and soul into this acting).

My only REAL complaint is not exclusive to the Gorosaurus remake but also deals with the original 3dmm movie, and pretty much every Godzilla movie ever made- there's not enough Godzilla! About half of these funny yet pointlesss dialouge scenes could have been removed in favor of more bouts of Godzilla stepping on things. Let's face it, whenever you watch a Godzilla movie, you suffer through the dialouge because you know the movie will make up for it with more of what we want to see- mutated dinosaurs breaking stuff. To be fair though, this movie doesn't take much time for exposition, it gets to the destruction pretty quickly and doesn't veer away from it much. I guess all this complaining is just my short attention span acting up again. Anyway, believe me, especially with Goro behind the wheel as the animator, all of this destructive chaos is fun to watch. It seems though that the only scenes really touched up in this remake are the ones dealing with Godzilla, while the dialouge scenes are (as far as I can remember anyway) basically left as-is, besides the new voices. It makes it feel kind of uneven, the funny voice acting is really the only thing that's there to keep your attention when Godzilla isn't on screen. Still, when he is, everything else is forgiveable- especially when you get to the incredibly animated last battle (complete with the best choice of midi EVER).

Still, this is kind of a hard one to score. Obviously, you have to be lenient because this is a movie that was originally made in '98, but at the same time, you have to judge how well the new director did at touching it up and giving it new life. The movie still suffers from the same problems it did back when it was made, namely a few utterly pointless dialouge scenes (such as the whole thing with 007), but thanks to Goro, the REALLY entertaining part (which, obviously, would be any part with Godzilla) holds up extremely well. Just for entertainment and nastalgia value, as it brings back memories of both 3dmm as it was back in 1998 and the old Godzilla movies I use to be so fond of, I can easily give it a 80% out of 100%. If your a fan of Gorosaurus' always awesome animation, or just like to unwind by watching monsters tear each other apart, this is one that's definately worth the download.

I have been a fan of Godzilla since I was 3! And I still watch Godzilla as my favorite movie. I mean who would hate a A Land and Water Dinsoaur mixed together forming Godzilla!

Thanks for the review! I had almost forgotten about this film; it has been years since I have seen or heard about it!

I am glad that you found the movie entertaining, and I am very appreciative for your kind words. I did indeed intend for many of the voices to be over-the-top (which was the only way I could make sure that different characters actually SOUNDED different), which is something that I think most previous reviewers did not appreciate.

An interesting thing to note is that G98PE is actually the original movie, frame for frame, in all non-Godzilla scenes. I simply added more depth to the scenery, cut out text boxes, and added voices. A poor decision in terms of entertainment, but I was honestly trying to only update the original movie. By the time I got to the end, though, I realized that it was still too similar to be successful so I spent 3 months creating the end fight.

The other monster is named Gabara, who is, in my opinion, one of the sorriest Godzilla enemies of all time. However Z-man, the original director, had a soft spot for him. This version doesn't resemble him very much (luckily), and his original electrical powers would have been too tough to animate in 3dmm.

Thank you again for the honest review!
