My main gripe with Mistake is that, considering what it actually is, it almost seems laboured. The concept had so much potential but the movie is let down by a lack of backgrounds in places (thus not helping to seperate the action from the monologue) and the fact that the movie draws on the beliefs of a character we rarely see and never hear, and as a result it makes it very hard to empathise with the ideas behind the text appearing on-screen. While atmospheric, the idea of the event being a mistake is contradicted by the man's final actions, told with such closure and brutality that it almost seems like elements of it were intentional. If this was done deliberately then I'm afraid to say I found it difficult to enjoy the desired effect. A lesser short but still one that stands its ground, and serves as a reminder that Storch is a talented director. And for all its flaws, Mistake is still a damn sight better than many other shorts that have been churned out in the past.
