Loads the actors, props and such into memory for quicker access during playback to prevent stuttering.

Loved it. My only complaint: I wish I could have redone my lines for better delivery and quality. Big props to you, Jon, for another kick ass flick.

Very nicely done. You touched a lot of philosophical questions, including the origin of God (angel?) itself, which many people don't even seem to care about.

Voice acting was great, but I felt like Jaymond's voice was a bit too amplified in comparison to Z-Man's. Barely though. For me, that would have been perfection.

I should probably watch it one more time to grasp what they are really talking about, but for now: beautifully done.

Thank-you all for the replies and feedback. Really appreciated. I'm starting to think I should have done what i did with LS and included the script for people to read later. Because it really isn't all that complicated on paper. Maybe a bit of it got lost in translation.

It's not really an origin story in the proverbial sense. The only beginning it has is it's supposed to be the first time they've met in a long time. It's more about the understanding between them, as if Lucifer had never been given an explanation for his existence of that of the world. Also, and this may clear some questions up, the Beach itself isn't real. It's a paradise created by God specifically for the purpose of the meeting. Which is why the film is in black and white because as Lucifer says, the audience 'isn't ready for it yet.' It's also why the war appears to be happening below them. In any case the film is designed to be open to interpretation because I wanted the audience to take different things from it.

Anyway, thanks to everyone and would appreciate some full-length reviews (hint, hint ). BTW a shame that some films are getting less feedback than others generally. This could well be a factor in the decline of good films. In any case, I may well make a follow-up to this at some stage. Z-Man seems to be up for it Jaymond if you are I never went anywhere you old hound dog, you just never come round for tea anymore.

This movie did not seem to be in the same vein as what I normally expect from Jon Barton. Liquid Sunshine had a certain color, a flare to it, whereas Devils + Angels seems to be the polar opposite, though in many ways a clear companion. Much like the characters of this movie, I suppose...

I'm finding it a little difficult to seperate my experience watching this film with being involved in its production (if only peripherally). Having read the script and anticipated it for so long, as well as putting a lot of thought in how best to create it from a pure efficiency standpoint, the themes of the movie and the majesty and wonder it hopes to evoke were kind of in the background during my initial watch. This is a problem with my particular perspective, not the movie, as far as I can tell, so I'll definitely need to go over this one a few more times before reviewing it.

BTW, Goro, you seem to have added that as a normal thread in the 3DMM Reviews Forum rather than as an actual Review, so there's no score, blurb, or auto-link.

Thanks for the review Goro. Much obliged and I can completely understand where you're coming from. In many ways I did want to make D+A because it's completely different to LS. I didn't really want to be lynchpinned into making one type of film, which is why I made it (although now I'm going to have to make something that doesn't ache of bittersweetness).

The fact that you were aching for colour was intentional, so in a way I'm both happy and sad that you longed for it. Happy because what I was trying to do seemed to work, but sad that it weakened your viewing somewhat. I'm making myself feel better by knowing it's you I'm talking to and promising my next film will be in full colour

I absolutely agree about the models. They have such limited animations that it is really difficult to get them to do what you want a lot of the time. I tried to make up for this with some imaginative camera angles but looking back I did need to do more with them.

Aaron must take credit for the War Footage. It was always the plan to have live action and i would have done it myself, but the textures themselves weren't numbered and Aaron had a 3dmm technique pitcheed above me that would speed up the process. On the related subject, and this is to do with you wanting more colour, I have to say that the animation of D+A is deliberately minimal. It's also a lot longer than LS, which in it's very design is stylistic colour. But I'd like to point out that my own 3dmming is not as accomplished as perhaps a Haynes or a 'Saurus. I'm not going to pretend I'd be qualified to make Redux 2 for instance. But D+A is a different design to my other stuff fundamentally, so maybe that was what you were expecting? I can't speak for you, but I have to say that I don't think this was ever going to be visually stunning. I just tried to justify the reason for that when I wrote the script.

With regards to the themes of the plot, a lot of people seem to be looking into this as much as they possibly can for either two reasons. One, because the characters are God and the Devil. Or Two, because LS is designed to arouse thought. I have to say, it needn't be more complicated than the concept of God and The Devil having a civilised (if conflicting) conversation. I just like the idea that somewhere, somewhen, they met and they had to talk. Just talk, and to hell with anything the Good Book says about Genesis - no pun intended. Really, it's only as complicated as the viewer makes it. To me, it's just a conversation that suggests things, instead of presenting a fully formed narrative (LS) that makes you think.

As for the Brave New Barton comment, don't be put off Goro - I just wanted to make something that doesn't take as long as HMC animation for once. Clearly I was wrong, because this took three years, so I haven't left that just yet. Like I said, my next film will be big eyes and colourful again. Thank-you for the genuine and honest feedback.

Came in a little late on the game here, but I just watched the movie. I don't have time to write out a full review or anything but I have to say I really did love it. At least as much as I loved Liquid Sunshine (my favorite 3dmm movie...I hated the play) or maybe I liked it more. Anyway, amazing v3dmm, good writing, good directing, great voice acting.

It's a really great film.

Bah, I've done that for new movies, too

Jon, if you want your reply back in the review, just copy and paste it from this thread. Glad to hear the next will be back to the tried and true, but don't do it on my account - do whatever you feel you can actually accomplish sanely. Both styles work wonderfully. Perhaps there's yet another style in you we haven't seen yet..!

QUESTION AARON: Will the review still work when the movie names are edited after the film fest?

Hmmm. It should, but it might be worth testing to be sure. BRB

Edit: Yup, it works perfectly.

Awesome script. Jay's voice acting was perfect for the atmosphere of the movie, though both were great. I really loved the emphasis on atmosphere and meaning rather than technical awe (though I never expected to see any live action in a 3d movie.) I loved the music during the movie, except the Hawaiian-ish "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" seemed to throw off the imagery and pace. Overall a beautiful film, and expands upon the film noir qualities a 3d movie can possess, just as DHIADW showed us the doorway.

At first I found it kind of irritating that Jaymond's voicing was clearly way louder than Z-Man's, but then when I fathomed more of what the movie was about, I actually ended up liking that contrast (even if the effect was unintentional...I'm gonna assume it was intentional, but I'm not sure). Brilliant voicing on both ends, and brilliant direction and dialog.

I pretty much nominated D+A for every category it was in because Jon Barton deserves it. Fantastic film.

Reviewed.

I should probably have gone a bit more in-depth, but my brain is at the boiling point already, so it's probably best that I don't.
