A Guide to Recording 3dmm Movies Longer than 10 minutes. (No Sound/Sync Problems!)

Download and INSTALL / Extract all of this stuff:

http://www.3dmmfiles.com/uploads/hom...dmmCapture.zip

Then do this:

Note: I know using this method ends up with a large file, so if you know how to re-encode and know what you're doing with the settings - feel free to mess around. This is more of a 'fail-safe' guide.

1. Close any messenger programs, like Google Talk, MSN or AIM as well as any other programs that could make noise or interfere with the recording process. It may help to make sure screen savers and time-based power saving options aren't enabled.

2. Open 3dmm, CYCLE THROUGH ALL SCENES by clicking through stuff. THAT'S RIGHT. ALL OF THEM. If you really want an awesome capture, edit all of the 'fade to' transitions to just clipping transitions.

3. Open CamStudio.

=== This stuff only needs doing once ===

4. Click Region > Fixed Region > Select > And draw a rectangle around the area of the 3dmm window you want to record. THE REGION COORDINATES MUST BOTH BE EVEN NUMBERS OTHERWISE THE CAPTURE WILL NOT WORK (FOR SOME REASON). Make sure you round them up/down to even numbers

5. Click Options > Record audio from speakers.

6. Click Audio Options > Audio Options for Speakers > Then ensure the correct recording line is selected by either using the 'Manual
Search' or the 'Auto Search' feature (if Auto Search fails, Manual search probably won't).

7. Click Options > Video Options. Under the drop-down menu, select 'XviD MPEG-4 Codec', next make sure the Quality is set to '100'.

Hit configure and make sure that the gauge there is set to '1 - Maximum Quality' as well. Hit OK and OK again to return to the main screen.

8. Click Options > Program Options > Temporary Directory for Recording > Use user specified directory. Under here, select a directory on a drive that has plenty of space. You will need to navigate to this directory, so make sure you remember it.

===============================

9. Make SURE nothing else is running that'll interrupt the recording. Seriously.

10. Hit the record button (big red circle!) and move the cursor so the rectangle covers the movie area of the 3DMM screen.

11. Hit play in the 3dmm window. DO NOT REFOCUS to other windows. You must not click a thing until the movie has finished playing.

12. When the movie has finished playing, you may need to click the 'CamStudio' task found on taskbar to restore the window, where you'll hit the stop button (black square!). READ THE NEXT POINT.

13. DO NOT SAVE THE MOVIE. Do not save the movie. Ok? Don't save it, but don't hit cancel either, leave the save dialog box up.

14. Navigate to the temporary folder you created/defined in step 8, you'll see two files:

- ~temp001.wav
- ~temp.avi

You must rename these, I renamed mine to:

- satanik.wav
- satanik.avi

15. Hit cancel on the 'Save as' dialog box and close CamStudio.

16. We now need to find the length of the video file, to do that - open Virtual Dub, hit File > Open Video File, and navigate to the folder where your files can be found. Open the avi file. You'll then need to drag the slider at the bottom to the very end. Look at the text at the bottom of the window, the numbers in the brackets (()'s!) show the length of the video file in the format: 'HOURS:MINUTES:SECONDS:MILLISECONDS'. Note this down and keep VirtualDub open.

17. Now open Goldwave, drag your .wav (audio) file onto the main screen.

18. Hit Effect > Timewarp. Select the 'Length' radio button and edit the text box to the far right side of it with the length of the VIDEO. Make sure you use the right conventions for the time, if possible - just edit the numbers and leave the :'s and .'s there.

19. Hit OK, wait for it to do its thing and now go to File > Save. NOTE: If you want to save space and upload size, you can Save AS a mono file (make sure it's still high quality and 3dmm uses mono anyways).

20. Close Goldwave.

21. Reactivate the VirtualDub window.

22. Click 'Audio' > WAV Audio. Then find your .wav file, open that.

23. Use the time-line at the bottom to click around your movie, hit play at various places to make sure it's in sync. If your movie is UNIFORMLY slightly out of sync, use the Audio > Interleaving > Audio Skew Correction tool to correct things. I found setting mine to 50 made things slightly more on time, but that's just for my capture - yours may be completely different.

24. Click Video > Direct Stream Copy.

25. Click Audio > Direct Stream Copy.

--- Note here ---

If you want to cut data from the start or end of the movies, you'll have to mess with Video > Select Range. It's all done in frames, so use the time-line and a bit of maths to work it out.

-----------------

26. Click File > Save As AVI. Save it using the convention:

Director - Movie Name (Movie Year).avi

So for Satanik, I'd save it as:

Andres de la Hoz - Satanik (2004).avi

27. Let it do its thing, it shouldn't take TOO long.

28. There we go, provided you didn't break everything, you should have a long 3dmm movie that's actually in sync.

Try not to make upload stuff to your solely to your own accounts, it might confuse people.

My first attempt!

Aaron Haynes - Charlie 5 (2007) (5MB)

The play button click sound is still there, though it wasn't in the virtualdub preview window, so I'll prefix movies with a few seconds of silence in the future.

Also, is it just me, or is the contrast higher than normal?

Nevermind. It was my WMP settings. I forgot I did that.

Awesome, seems to work just fine. I hope the instructions were easy enough to understand.

Andres De La Hoz - SATANIK (2004)

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?...72343&hl=en-GB

Or

Note: It goes about 50ms (0.05 seconds) out of sync at the end, as I resampled the time to the nearest second, rather than the exact time. I only came up with the way to do things precisely after I uploaded this. It's not really an issue, though - you can barely notice it.

I just managed to convert 007, but Google Video's uploader is down, apparently, and YouTube won't accept files over 100MB. :\

So like, do we need a place to upload these to, or are my services not required here?

Is this how you did MC last time or would it need to be redone?

I did something similar with MC last time, but it was a much lengthier process using about 10 different pieces of software and a lot of manual editing and tweaking to make sure everything stayed in sync.

Even though this process is a lot simpler, the results will be far superior to the one I did previously.

I'd prefer to re-do MC, it really doesn't take a huge amount of time and it'll be worth it for the perfect syncing right across the movie.

Yes they can. Press the 'Comments' link on the sidebar of any video on Google.

Yeah, we wouldn't choose use a medium where discussion is impossible. I would have preferred YouTube, but there seems to an irritation with the file sizes they'll allow, even with a Director's account. We're working on it, but for now - Google Video will be just fine. If things work out, using both YouTube and Google would be perfect.

If you want a "director copy" of your movie, it would be best to convert it yourself, if your computer is up to it, because the filesize is enormous. Pamela, at 13:02, is 460MB.
