Dark City

So I watched this film for my english class just now. ANd uh... yeah. It was cool, it was cool, and then it's like "CLIMAX" and the whole movie suddenly sucked. Man, that was a big case of blue balls.

Hey I actually just saw this the other day. I wish I had seen the director's cut though, because (supposedly) the opening narration isn't in it, and I think this would have been more of a mindfuck if there hadn't been an opening monologue.

Not sure about blue balls, but yeah, that whole "climax" thing sort of..well...sucked..compared to the build-up of the entire film.

I grabbed the Directors Cut, it indeed lacks the opening monologue which was added due to the Stuido's demands, and a few additional scenes and sub plots. It's a far superior version of the movie.

Yeah, the ending did kind of suck - I still really love the movie though, one of my personal favourites.

The ending was the best part of the movie, all of you must have mental problems.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I loved the fact he got to Shell Beach and made things the way he felt they needed to be, but the whole 'fight' scene was kind of... messed up, and lacked any real "FUCK YEAH" moments, at least for me.

i definitely thought of Dead Heart in a Dead World, what with the city's isolation. Did you rip that off, Andrizzle? DID YOU?!

I mean, looking back at the whole I've implanted you with memories of having the Strangers' abilities-thing seemed sort of corny at first, but in the end it was actually quite brilliant. But I agree with Don in the sense that I didn't really feel like there were those "Oh hell yeah" moments. It almost seemed too easy. Felt like I was watching the ending of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix...which, unfortunately, I saw first.

The battle itself wasn't great but the two payoffs (the water flowing and the first sunrise) were both excellent and the soundtrack was pretty damn amazing throughout the entire last fifteen minutes.

Actually, yeah, there were a few points throughout the movie where I was like "...fuck this music is really good."

I had heard the soundtrack sampled elsewhere and honestly I was expecting some sort of crazy chase scene throughout the city with some of those tracks.

I mean, I guess there was one, but crazy how you hear one thing when there's no visual and anticipate something completely off-target.

Oh, most definatly agreed - the score build up to the sunrise, and that whole moments deliverance ranks as one of my personal favourite movie moments. If I remember rightly, it was actually included in the Trailer! It's sad that this whole movie was over shadowed by Titanic upon it's release - I feel it kind of never really got paid the attention it deserved.

Edit: I think this movie also holds the record for least average time per shot? I think I remember heard that on the commentary. It's just "cut, cut, cut, cut, cut" from start to finish.

Yes this, the only blu-ray movie I own. Luckily watched the director's cut the first time... that opening monologue KILLS the movie. It would be like having opening monologues on lost to kill all the mystery before the episode even started. The impact of the end, when you see the city in it's entirety, and the end with the water/sunrise, absolutely stunning.

Did anyone else get recommended to watch this originally after seeing the matrix?

Plus the idea that these people and the city itself are constantly being swapped around and everything about their lives is fake, fleeting and manipulated I found powerfully unsettling.

Agreed. I loved the part in the directors cut where Anna is playing with her Wedding Ring, and William Hurt's character asked why she's fiddling with it, because it looks as though she's uncomfortable with it and she replies that she's worn it every day since they were married. The whole concept that we although our memories tell us we've worn the ring for years but our body physically isn't adjusted to it was amazing, and I felt should have remained in the theatrical cut.
