Yes, Jim. He designed it like that. It's an awesome feature.

What's the point of remaking a fight scene?

Well I actually took the time to watch this, and it was as bad as I expected.

But uh... Full Cure heals Jack for 99999, and then when Life's cast on him, it says like.. '999999999'. WTF.

I think Jack's hiding something if the amount of health he has can increase and decrease at will. Has he been honest with the rest of his party? I anxiously await the next installment!

I seem to recall having a general idea of what the characters' HP values were, but didn't really think about that not being clear to the audience.

Okay, I have a question. Does anyone find these turn-based fight scenes exciting? I mean really. Yeah, super to watch in a game when you're PARTICIPATING in it, but this is like watching a friend play and RPG. Is that EVER fun?

I know what you mean, Dustin. I can't even watch the fight scenes in the old Vlarions anymore. But back in the day, it was exciting to watch because of the resemblance, and to see what clever spells and cool effects could be done.

But now since any movie that uses turn-based fights is greatly dated, there's nothing impressive about them.

As if it wasn't obvious from the series itself, what I really wanted to do in 1999 was make an RPG, but all I had was 3DMM, and I was fourteen.

The battles themselves entertained me purely as a kind of animation sandbox. Most of the effects animation I learned how to do, I learned from the battle scenes in Vlarion. I am keenly aware that they have very little, if any, dramatic tension, and are only effective at all if you can wrap your head around the RPG construct and get involved in the movie purely from that angle. That's why I haven't done one since 2002.

Well, your more recent Vlarion had very well done battles so i guess it was just a learning curve or something.

I'd say it was more a difference in priorities. Take a look at Alternate Vlarion 3 and then look at Redux, about a year and a half later. Completely different styles, but AV3, at its best visually, is the equal or better of almost anything I did in Redux, which surprises people to this day. Redux just happened to be where I first tried using 3DMM for that kind of movie.

Not that there wasn't a learning curve, granted. But V1 2006 was also me doing the same type of film as in 1999, with different cinematic goals. I also knew that in 1999, there was no way I could make a full cinematic experience on that scale. Could you imagine just trying to find voice actors of the caliber that are in Vlarion 1, in 1999? 12-15 mature voices? Apart from MOS, nothing from that time period was even close. Most of the community was probably pre-puberty in those days.

So, a combination of skill level, cinematic goals, and better tools with the expansion packs and v3dmm.
