Plans for 3dmm.com's Future

As most of you can probably tell, the board is back on a hosting service like it was before. From now on you will only be able to access this site from the true domain (www.3dmm.com). Special thanks goes to Travis for hosting the board during the hosting switch transition.

Right before the site went down 2 weeks ago, I had a few plans I wanted to announce, but never was given an opportunity to discuss them because of all the madness with the server crashing every day.

The first thing I wanted to inform everyone about were the cutbacks I made with our moderators. To be brutally honest, I took away everyone's mod powers except Travis' and my own. I wasn't pleased with all the drama that was heating up between the two groups, and I felt that loosening the rules around here would probably be the healthiest thing for the community. Things were going quite well until the board started crashing, and I hope it will continue to go smoothly now that things are (hopefully) more steady.

The second thing I wanted to discuss deals with creating another forum. I believe it would be a good idea to create a "bullshit" forum where people would be free to spam or do whatever they like without worry or fear of getting banned. The only rule I would really enforce here would be a "no flooding" rule, for obvious space and bandwidth issues. This would probably replace Midback's forum.

Lastly, I'm interested in redesigning the entire site, finally getting a working movie database created, and finishing the other incomplete sections. I'm not sure when I will begin this process, or even IF I will begin this process--it all depends upon how well the board works on this new server, and whether or not the community will bounce back after this little slump we encountered since the server crashes.

Thanks for reading, and if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please reply to this thread.

Sounds nice.

But I don't like the sound of a spam forum, but I guess it's a lot easier for the mods, so whatever.
If there were more mods they could just close stupid topics right away.

I'm not sure bout the bullshit forum.

A lota people just can't be bothered to go to two forums for funny stuff.

but on the other hand, I've always stuck with the idea that one forum is all we need, and that movie forum is useless, but that's just my opinion.

Goat, one more thing.
U seem to be paying a lota money for the site, and we really appreciate it, but u thought of making money with this site?

I'm sure people won't call u a "sell out" for having one or two banners on the site to click and make money.

When people know that all the money comes outta your pocket, they won't care if u try to make money from the site to pay it off, so u don't have to pay outta your pocket.

Just a thought.

Banner ads are a waste, everyone by now has conditioned themselves to ignore them, and since the only way you can get any money off of them is if your visitors click on them routinely, it'd be a waste to have them there. The alternative are pop-up ads, and I'd never in a million years put pop up ads on this board. They were the reason we left ezboard in the first place!

If it ever comes to a lack of funds (which I don't see happening anytime soon), I would set up a community chest and run it through paypal. If as few as 20 people contributed around 2 bucks a month, we'd be in GREAT shape for a long time. In fact, if just 5 people contributed 5 dollars a month, I'd be in even better shape than that.

Now that you got me thinking about all this, accepting donations might not be such a bad idea after all. Perhaps I could finally get enough space to have my own movie database and enough bandwidth to support it. I'll think about it, in the meantime, it might be good if anyone who would be willing to make a donation step forward now so I can see just how many people would be interested in that type of system. I can't imagine needing more than $5 or $6 a month from each person. It would more likely be between $3 or $4, I guess it just depends how many people are helping out. It's practically pocket change when you start spliting it up like this.

Oh! I think i found an error. I did the 'lost password' thing, and it gave me the url http://www.3dmm.com/members.php instead of the real link http://www.3dmm.com/bboard/members.php, I got it anyways but you should look at it.

U do have a point.

Cuz I know someone else running a website who doesn't have much money so everyone that visits on his page it says, "click the banner ads on my site atleast once in a while, that way i won't have to close my site down"

so a lota people do. cuz they don't wanna see his site down.

but yeah, I'd be willing to donate.

done and done

I'd defently donate 2 bucks, no hassels there.
What you could have, though, is a page with banners and adds on it, that people could go to say once a month or something and click them all, getting you the money. I don't know, just as long as we don't have to pay for memership here, cause if that happens I'm outta here.

Yeah, I agree with Don there.

But the thing I would most like to see done would be the unfinished sections. A movie database simply makes my mouth drool...

Anywho, I don't think that a SPAM forum is a wise idea. It WOULD simply end up as a floodplain, and I would never visit it anyways. I figure that most spammers would just stick with this forum anyhow.

Would your movie database actually contain the movies themselves, or just be a comprehensive list of movies made by directors over the years?

Yeah, anywho, great to see the board back at it's home.

I personally think every member should grab some free webspace, and host their own movies and the data base have links to them.
But I doubt thats entirely possible, www.3dmm.co.uk has plenty of movies on it, but didn't will's server get too full or something?

The idea of spamming is to put it where everyone will see it... isn't it? I assume people do it to annoy people, so wanna give it as much exposure as possible, so a 'Bullshit' forum would accomplish nothing. It defeats the purpose of spam, which is to put crap amongst all the good stuff.

Otherwsie, tis all soundig good.

so now the fights can only take place in the bullshit section and everyone has to be civil on here?? I would like that idea alot. And about you making money off of it. Why not make 3dmm.com BB a subscription service. Everyone has to pay $2 a month to keep their membership (and of course follow the rules). That way it's dedicated and people can't slack off.

bullshit forum? na na na... its a good idea, but most people spam for attention, which no one will care in that forum. Or people spam to try to be funny.

i kinda like the idea of a bullshit forum and if it doesnt work we should just stop being so lenient towards spammers. just ban their asses for life and dont let them back in!

only problem your going to have with donations is payments

credit cards : only old vets will be able to pay, newbs might get there parents to but they will say "whats it for" and you say "im giving to dolloars to space goat" then you get molested for the rest of your life

so i dunno how many people can actually donate

how musch does all this cost you goat now out of interest

"I'd be willing to click those damn ads atleast once a day if it means u taking less money outta your pocket to pay for 3dmm.com"

what about a page we can goto full of all these pay ads and stuff

that way we wont see them unless we wanted to

just one page full of them with popups on it and all sorts of pay shit we can click away at to make you money

i would rather do that than donate

I'm prepared to donate $20 a moth (American) if it means nice movie database archive and a REALIABLE server.

But I will defiantly pull out on a slump repeat.
