Plot Summary:
This was completed in 2002, not long after the release of G98PE. In fact, I'm pretty sure I completed this within two weeks of being asked by JP. The other contributers took a little longer to get things together, so the official release of Death of the Newbie wasn't until much later that same year (Possibly early December).
This was a bittersweet piece for me because, while I knew I had made a cute, attractive clip, I was disappointed to see so many people overlook the rest of DotN and just focus on Phobic. Of course, deep down, if I disliked it more than I enjoyed it, I probably wouldn't be re-releasing it right now! But I still think that disclaimer needs to be put on this. I was told to find a way to have my character die, but the 'theme' of my skit was "animation." I'm pretty sure that meant cartoons, and those two don't usually go together real well. I think I did a pretty good job of figuring out a clever way to have the two put together (I remember fretting for a good week about how I was going to accomplish my own death, and still make it seem like a cartoon!). It was cheesy, and it's not exactly original, but I think it worked. Just so no one took it too seriously, I spiced on a few hints along the way (I still think the judge's parts are pretty funny). I spearheaded a few new effects for myself in this movie.. most of which are never seen again, because they weren't too successful. You'll probably also notice that many parts seem a bit rushed.. and that's because they are. This was the first (And one of the only, actually) movie that Z-man didn't do the sound effects for me, and I didn't care much about architecture or anything like that, so many parts are well under par. But, in retrospect, that provides a pretty interesting distinction between the 'real' world, and the world inside my brain. Hmm. Cheapness is extra sweet when it can be so easily written off like that! Yes, animated Gorosaurus looks like Ziggy. I wasn't much into character creation back then, and I knew that having a character that was both interesting to look at and easily sphere-icized was key. I also kinda hoped that no one would notice. Since then, I think I've figured out that it's always worst when I notice. In fact, you can almost trace my thinking as the movie progresses. I didn't have any idea what "I'd" end up looking like when I had started the fear chamber bit, which is why I have not only a peach-colored hand early on, but an impressively-detailed peach-colored hand, at that! Ah well, it was one of the first shots that popped into my head, so it's got a free ride to make the cut. And yeah, I did all the voices for this, as well. AnimatedGoro's voice is closer to what I'm really like than you'd probably hope, though. This movie was very largely synched in Win98, but I just watched it and it works pretty well in XP also. Doesn't synch at all, but there's no dry spells, and it all flows pretty good. |
