Ok I downloaded a Model From a site...

OK I found a site to download a model from so I could get my feet wet with this modeling thing. Anyway I found this:

ok what are the differences between the ones I circled?

I went a ahead and downloaded the obj one because I remember 7gen having an obj converter. Then I ran the converter and created a vxp. everything worked and here it is in 3dmm.

so yeah it looks good and all but I am wondering what the process is to skin the thing?

anyway thanks to anyone that replies, as you can see I am green to all of this and still have the training wheels on.

I've been wondering the same thing, When I tried to import an obj model, all the textures became full costumes, so the face appeared on every body part at once, not just the face. Haven't, uh, haven't taken the time to deal with it because I still haven't gotten Milkshape to work on my active computer.

I didnt even open it in milkshape yet. just downloaded teh obj, converted it to vxp and opend v3dmm. by default it was white, then I could go to the costume tool and change the color like any other object.

So if you go to laod the image in 3dmm and it crashes does that mean it has too many polygons?

Also I got a couple of models (A PC, and A Gas Stove) and when I imported them into 3dmm they were REALLY small. is this just hwo the model is made or is there something I can do about it?

If it has too many polygons it usually just doesn't show up (after adding it to the scene). I guess crashing is another way.

Import the 3DS/OBJ/LWO (they can all be imported) into Milkshape and from there you can add a texture. Find some tutorials on texture mapping in Milkshape. It's not TOO challenging.

Select certai polygons, open texture mapper, place polygons over area of texture you want mapped, repeat for entire model.

Then export as OBJ. And I believe the texture (BMP) has to go in the, uh... same folder as 7gen? Yeah.

Oh, and:

3DS = AutoDesk 3D Studio Object
LWO = Lightwave Object
OBJ = Wavefront 3D Object

It's just different types of compression/storage of formats for certain programs.

OK I figured it out, and you are right Ash, it's really not that difficult to do. NOW making it look really good is another stroy but the basic process of adding textures is pretty simple.

7Gen is fucking awesome by the way.
