Made with vanilla, unmodded 3D Movie Maker and based off of the Nintendo Gameboy game of the same name is my old fashion style movie:
"Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge"

Long ago I tried my own simple version of handmade character animation
when I was far, far younger making Mega Man and also Mega Man 2.
Many years later I decided to continue my version of retelling the old NES game's story.

For this movie I kept it in the same retro style of when I had made the older movies.
So it is intentionally made to look like an older movie maker movie, but not with crappy fades.
Still we have MIDI music soundtrack and older 90's sound effects pulled from sound effect CD's and PC games of the time.
But also computer voices. Not the newer AI voices mind you, but the voice generators of old.
So again if "robo" voices bother you then stop right now and give it a skip.

Story-wise I tried to explain and expound upon some of my version's plot I had thought up way back when I was 13.
So you get a bit of set up more so before the action begins.
It's no high drama, and I try to make it mostly humorous given the visuals here,
but I hope I kept it watchable for the most part aside from those craving the highest film standards out of a 1997 PC program for children that so many seem to have here.

I say use movie maker within it's means, and this is the way I envision it used today.
Retro aesthetic movies, even about "vintage" subject matter helps also.
Call it a cop out if you like, or nostalgia goggles or whatever trope you want.

Hopefully it feels like a trip down memory lane but it was truly just made as of 2024. It took a bit over 3 months of really working a lot on it.

A sequel to a 1998 3DMM. Crazy huh? Link below in "Download Mirror" section if interested only.

I only put the link to the Youtube video at the bottom in the "downloads" box so only people really serious about seeing it would click it.

When I put an embedded player people click, see two seconds, skim through twice and leave. They will still do that, but less so if you have to hunt for the link. Maybe it's buried a little too deep?

Alright so a few of us watched it on streamed and I think overall we did enjoy it, there’s a few things though that really could’ve made it a whole lot better. There’s way too much black background, it makes it feel really empty, when there is custom scenery being applied it looks quite good so it does just kinda come across as lazy. I would’ve much rather a shorter film with better custom scenery honestly. We decided to check out your main channel, we quite enjoyed your voice. I wish you would use your voice it in your films rather than this what I assume is just text to speech. That all being said the visuals are very charming, definitely feels like something made in the 90s era of 3D Movie Maker and I think that’s what you were aiming for so well done.

The HMCs are really the standout thing in this. They're very charming and have really good animation at points. One sequence that looks really good is the whole Enker fight. The only thing really wrong with it is they're usually only shown at a front angle which is a little boring.

I'm a little stuck with making sequels to movies I made when I was 13 years old, not wanting to change too much and make them match the originals, so I went with the old robo voices. The old ones have a lot of views, comments, and fan so I don't want to lose elements that people are "liking" somehow. It would be great to upgrade but 3dmm dot com people are not the audience I care about, considering I can see the stats and the average view length from here is a few minutes of the 20 or so.

So those are super valid points that would make them appeal to more people.
And yet, would they really watch it more so with those improvements?
Or is the novelty of an older style what keeps getting the views and enjoyment from people?

That's the sort of things I have to wonder. Appeal to non-fans, or fans?

So same for the backgrounds. Another month or so of adding the backgrounds in would make it look great for sure. Worth the effort?
Lazy indeed. That is exactly it, though we are not talking about a few minutes of work. Same situation for the angles, all new model builds needed for it, so it's used sparingly. If I can continue this, you will see more and more new angles used for sure though.

It is cool to see the real evaluation though. It was fun to jump back into and make a full movie using my old assets and bring them to life again. I know mods and the extreme efforts put in by the multitude of better animators here make this look pretty lame. But there is an audience out there that likes the retro look and feel.

At least there are no dissolve fades....oh wait...

Man you way overthinking this imo. Your fan are just children that wanna watch your video game 3dmm animations, they wouldn't stop watching if you actually talked in them or put more effort into them. You’re definitely right in the fact I can’t actually see your fans changing much by increasing your quality, although you’re more likely to see increased engagement rather than decreased. Really up to you what you think is work your time though, just wanted to give my two cents. Thanks for the response anyhow.

I very much am, but I suppose that's a symptom of years of failure.
Just trying to find what works for what I want to do, and what people will get something out of.
Realistically I would just learn a better animation program altogether if I wanted them "better."

I'm trying for "aesthetic" or whatever they say now. But really I will look into the voice option. Maybe something like other robots keeping a generated voice, but the rest of the main reoccurring characters having real voices. A lot of comments were about enjoying the robo-voices and their strange cadence and tone, so I would have to drop it all together.

Liking the old movies, man. How come you never submitted these on a website back when you first made them?

Edit: Ah ok, I saw your answer in the Animorphs thread.
