Can we delete every post SINCE 2010 instead?

Seriously though, I'm pretty devastated by these post deletions. I don't post here anymore but I still come around all the time to read old threads. Losing them is like losing a huge chunk of my adolescence. They're the only mementos I have left of many old friendships (including, as has been mentioned, people who have since died). And as someone who never posted anywhere else online or kept a diary, they are also the most meaningful mementos I have of my own younger self. I'm not kidding when I say I anticipated nostalgically reading these in a nursing home someday.

In short - yes, these posts are a potential privacy concern, but they're also a big part of many of our childhoods. You've never been very active on the social side of the community and have always been more privacy-oriented than most of us, so I'm worried you may be missing that side of this.

I have a couple suggestions (in order of preference!) of how to address the privacy issues less destructively:

1. Restore the posts and implement a less extreme solution instead. One possibility that comes to mind is keeping non-3dmm forums hidden, and also preventing registered users from seeing non-3dmm threads from more than 10 years prior to their registration. I think this would protect just as well as your current solution against even a Happyjuice situation (someone who already knows you post here and your username registers to dig up dirt).

2. Give me a database dump and permission to set up a non-Google-indexed 3dmm.com archive

3. At least temporarily restore the posts for a month or two to give us time to add more Classic Threads. My standards definitely would've been way different if I'd known it was archive or oblivion.

But please do SOMETHING else. I'm on my knees pleading here.

EDIT: Changed my mind on this one, I now just agree with what Phil Williamson proposed knowing what I know now.

They can make a new account. That's what Guy Collins and some other members did, you make an account and get space goat to merge it with your old one or reset the password

lmao Goat ain’t gonna respond to this thread or post on this forum again for another year when he suddenly decides to prune some more shit

but yes I am still in awe at what a shockingly bad decision this was. if shitty babies are embarrassed at their old posts they can just get their stuff dealt with individually. no need to erase such a massive amount of history like this.

goat please prove me wrong and respond here with how you plan on reinstating these posts

True, this is really the only truly negative thing thats happened with the updates that Ive heard about. Even then this was done is good faith.

Thanks for paying to keep it up as well. In the future, it would be better to make these kinds of changes after consulting the community and getting a decent understanding of the kinds of people here and their opinions. Three groups exist currently, and that's people currently involved here who may view old threads for certain reasons, lurkers who use this place to reminisce, etc. and people who may be ashamed of their past, are moved on and worried people will find out about their old posts here. It would be fair to consider all three with this kind of decision, and that comes with familiarizing yourself and consulting the community first.

the last big community uprising was the banning of omnirom and dungeon snake in 2013, it split the community in two and a large group left for a while after it happened

Now that a few days have passed, I am, if anything, more opposed to this decision than ever. Just in the small time since the purge, I've already had a couple moments where I was searching for something, couldn't find it, and then realized "oh right, everything is gone." You don't realize how often you viewed old threads until you're no longer able to.

Any 3dmmer, new or old, knows that the threads made in the last ten years are sadly lacking, both in quality and quantity, compared to those from 2001-2014. This isn't to say that there haven't been any memorable community moments or enjoyable, re-readable threads produced in the last ten years; there have definitely been some. But they are way fewer and further between than during the period from 2001-2014, which is basically where 95% of the community's greatest content is buried (and honestly, of the meager amount of greatness from the last ten years, most of it is probably from 2014-2016, years which are apparently slated for deletion next).

When you have a community whose golden age occurred 10+ years ago and now operates largely on nostalgia for that period, being able to read the old material becomes a critical part of what makes the present community function. Without that ability, 3dmm.com's off-topic catalogue essentially becomes a miserable vacuum, defined by mortifying Patryk threads, the incomprehensible autistic musings of random newbs, and all the uninspired content which has unfortunately been the centerpiece of 3dmm's post-2016 phase.

The movie sharing aspect of this place has been moribund for many years. Yet people are still here. This is because most people, while they may join this place because of the moviemaking stuff, ultimately stay because of the unique and entertaining community and its bizarre, hilarious history. Now, most of that vibrant history has been effectively extinguished. I really hope this will be reversed.

Space Goat, please read Phil's post and consider it carefully.

You may as well delete the forum if you are going to delete the posts.
Maybe it is time.
