2024 Site Status Update

Hello everyone,

As we welcome in 2024, I thought I should announce some recent changes I've made to the site.

In an effort to protect both our past and present community members from web scrapers and other emerging privacy threats, I've decided to make all the off-topic forums require a registered user account in order to access. The only forums which remain publicly accessible are 3dmm Chat, 3dmm Releases, and Site Announcements.

Also, out of respect for a lot of older users who have expressed a wish for their history on here be forgotten, I have made the painful decision to prune all the off-topic forums so that any thread without a new reply in the past 10 years has been deleted. The only exception to this was the "Classic Threads" forum, which as mentioned earlier, is no longer accessible to anonymous users. My intention is to continually prune the off-topic forums again like this every few years.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone, especially those who registered using their real name, that I am willing to change your username if you PM me, no questions asked. Just tell me what you want it renamed to and I will change it as soon as I see your request.

On the technical side of things, the site continues to run mostly trouble free, despite the fact that its entire tech stack is horribly decrepit. As most would probably guess from my extended absences, I'm no longer actively planning a forum software migration or any significant upgrades in 2024. The most I can see myself doing to this site is containerizing its outdated dependencies so it can be run with docker on a more modern host OS. That said, if anyone out there has a strong web development background and an interest in evolving this site into a more modern platform for sharing movies, please get in touch with me! I'm open to collaborating.

Before I end this, I just want to thank my moderator team for basically running the site for me. I want you all to know how much I appreciate your efforts. It's because of you that this site is able to still exist.

I was confused for a second there when I saw the site being in maintenance,
and it was rumored that it was planning to shut down, but that turned out bullshit,
because Plop said it to me on Discord that it was 'closing down', but really he was
trolling me for absolutly no reason, but I was also confused when the site reopened
because the Off-Topic and Misc. subforums were gone where I did not log in, but I think
I understand why you did this... we don't want random people to call us out for
bad stuff we said/done in the past and the present, and we don't want Children
seeing comments with swearing in them, so maybe it'll be best to just to protect
the Children, thanks goat... thanks for protecting the children!

This is a great move, in my opinion. A part of me feels a bit sad to see threads get pruned, but I've regretted a lot of the things I've said on this site as a stupid, edgy teen, and I'd hate to have an employer or partner Google my name and assume posts I made decades ago represent my current personality. I might even take you up on that offer for a new user name, once I figure one out.

I'll be honest, I'm pretty unhappy about this. As some one who frequently enjoys reading old threads by people like Clinton and Flounder, this purge takes away a substantial amount of the fun of 3dmm.com, especially since most of the community's best moments were 10+ years ago. I understand that some people have concerns over privacy, but I feel like this is way too broad a sweep. Come to think of it, has there ever actually been a time when a 3dmmer's posting history was used against them? It feels like something people are constantly worried about happening, but never actually happens. Even Jason and Peter, who have successful showbiz careers, don't seem to be suffering from cancellation over old 3dmm content (I assume that's what the privacy concerns are really about).

The only example I can think of where a 3dmmer's posting history being used against them was Happyjuice during his divorce. In that case, we simply removed some old posts of his. This current move seems way more extreme, despite being rooted in much more ambiguous "maybe one day I might get in trouble for something" concerns. Again, I've never heard of a 3dmmer losing a job opportunity because of embarrassing 3dmm content. And let's be honest, the most embarrassing 3dmm content probably lies in the movies.

I'm also not crazy about the idea of requiring an account to view off-topic. I feel like the only real result of that is that fewer lurkers will be moved to join the community, since the website will appear significantly deader to them. Granted, this a much more minor complaint.

I dunno, this just seems very depressing to me. I'm pretty bummed out over the idea of not being able to enjoy old threads again. And I'm sure there are a lot of important community threads that aren't in the archives that we'll lose (the McZeatles release thread, the Christo/Omnirom ban debates, the existence of Suttsteve, etc.). This feels very drastic.

Great update and Happy New year Space Goat, also What about a 3dmm dedicated Public uploader? They're Javascript Tutorial videos on YT of how to create uploader, As especially I'm a bit concerned that every time newer v3dmm mods get activated, they don't get mirrored on 3dmmfiles.com anymore.
