@Clinton: You have to screw with BMDLs in 3DMM Pencil and replace pieces of the model with other shapes. Something most of us are probably too dumb to do.

A tutorial on how to do this would be excellent. I recently tried to edit the BDMLs of Ramu to give him normal hair, and even though Pencil showed the new hair, loading the vxp into v3dmm just created a second default Ramu (yes the 3cn was saved).
