Description:
The training ship Esmeralda is an instructional vessel of the Chilean Navy, built in Spain. It is the sixth Chilean ship named Esmeralda, though it is colloquially known as 'The White Lady.' Currently, it is the third-largest sailing ship in the world (considering depth and length), along with its twin belonging to the Spanish Navy, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano.
Its name honors both the frigate Esmeralda —a vessel of the Spanish fleet captured in Callao on the night of November 5, 1820, by Admiral Lord Thomas Alexander Cochrane— and the corvette Esmeralda —a ship commanded by Commander Arturo Prat Chacón, who died heroically in the Naval Battle of Iquique. Graduating officers from the Arturo Prat Naval Academy and the top 70 senior ranks of the personnel from the Alejandro Navarrete Cisterna Seaman School undertake the Instruction Cruise on board the training ship for a period of one year. |
