7gen, making background help

I want to make my custom background have the change of depth that the vanilla backgrounds have when i move a character to the back.

Im guessing that's what the "Depth Map" does, but how do I use the "Depth Map" section? Also what does "Dither background/preview do"?

The "7gen for dummies" thread in the "The Official Collection of 3DMM/Modding Tutorials" doesn't have info on that. Thank you.

The way a depth map works is that it's a render of a 3D scene in grayscale, where the darker a colour is the closer it is to the "camera". For example, in the misty city scene, the ticket booth would be a dark gray and the background would be a lighter shade of gray. It would be a gradient of grays from the front to the back.

You can make one from an existing photo (using this website), but this might not work very well as it's just an algorithm. A 3D model of your scene would be ideal, as you can render a depth map in blender (see this StackExchange answer).

In either case, you should get a foggy looking image. Save it as a BMP in your photo editing software of choice (i.e. PhotoShop or Paint.NET), then put it into the depth map section of the bmp2vxp tool in 7gen.
