I mean, I certainly wouldn't miss some of my own posts if they disappeared overnight (I'd guess that's true of a lot of us at least to some extent), but I too am sad to hear that so many great threads have vanished in an instant without people having had the opportunity to privately archive stuff for posterity. I've always been more into the multimedia memories of this place and I'm fortunate to already have a big archive of images and audio and video, so I'm lucky there, but I know the threads themselves mean a lot to many others.

I absolutely respect Goat for tackling privacy concerns though. There's a delicate balance to be struck here, given the aforementioned Happyjuice situation. I know that specific kind of scenario isn't likely to repeat itself in a hurry but I do think Goat was right to do something. I'm just not sure it should have been so sudden or quite so destructive, as Phil put it.

I also agree with Phil's first suggestion as a good alternative. I personally have no issue at all with established members of this site reading the stupid shit I posted here as a teen, because this community understands the context in which that stuff was posted. On the rare occasion that I do think about my privacy in relation to this site, I'm thinking of that specific scenario where a third party could simply register an account in order to read my backcatalogue of posts if they really wanted to. I appreciate that this is unlikely but it's not out of the question, as I've told various people about this place throughout my life. Perhaps some of the members mentioned in the OP have other privacy concerns that would not be solved by simply hiding old content from new members but I can't think what those would be.

Also, this screenshot absolutely does reflect my current beliefs, in case anyone was wondering

I was just talking about the passing of time with a couple of close friends and the topic of manually editing old forums to erase people's past identities came up, upon user request or more aggressive GDPR trolling. We've seen it first hand and discussed how it was a fate worse on par with a total shutdown. You end up with threads vanished at random or worse, riddled with redactions and missing posts making them effectively unintelligible gibberish.

That made me think back to my youth posting here and want to check in for the first time in a few years. How wryly amusing to find this thread and learn a similar thing is taking place here.

What a pity.

Guys these weren't personal journal entries or intimate home movies. It's like being upset you lost a record of dumps you took

IMO The funniest and most memorable posts on this site have all had some visual or audio component that is most likely 404'd by now anyway... (So I guess we are at the mercy of HMC to upload his archive)

Right but if all the dumps were in one pile, for a bunch of people who cherished them. But 20 years later, 10% of the shitters got embarrassed cleaned up 90% of it and 90% of the shitters wanted to keep it as they still loved and cherished it all these years later.
