I mean... I don't think the intimate home movies comparison is that far off. 3dmm.com is basically a scrap book of a fascinating little internet community with a bizarre, unique history. It's a community that has played a big role in my life, and clearly other people's lives. It's a scrap book full of tons of good times, a few bad times, and a whole lot of baffling times. I think that our unique history is something worth holding onto.

And I think the point about broken pictures / audio is, at best, an exaggeration. Sure, there are definitely some old threads that don't really make sense anymore due to broken media (the thread where we wrote a Blade sequel comes to mind), but there are also tons and tons of great and important community moments where that wasn't an issue.

I think what's so important and fascinating is that there was an enormous quantity of site history, despite this site being essentially unknown. Now that the majority of it is gone, the board looks small and puny compared to how it was before.

What in the actual fuck kind of decision was that??? I don't even post here and I already consider the idea to nuke a forum without any consideration for the content to be the most colossally bad move ANY website has ever made. Something Awful didn't even do that and they worry extremely hard about "problematic" content every day!

edit: Though after thinking about it, SA already somewhat had a feature like that in the form of old dead threads becoming archived, and those archived posts were only available to people who paid a one time fee for archives access. Still, they're not deleted. They're there. Mods only occasionally blank out a post someone brings up that isn't good over there.

Do specifically this. There is nothing else other than this that I would suggest anyone do with posts if they're going to delete things.

Man, I'm so tired of people going "boo hoo I'm so sorry for the things I did (said bad words online) here let me delete all my stuff to make up for it" like there aren't good things surrounding all the naughty words that you're taking from people when you do it. I thought it was pretty bad when individuals did it by hand, but now it's someone making a decision on behalf of everyone involved without their say. This has got to be the biggest problem I've ever seen, and I've been looking at internet shit for almost as long as internet shit has been a thing. I have no horse in this race and I still feel really bad for the people who've lost a piece of their history.

Support from an unlikely source, but hey I'll take it.

Out of curiosity, what is your relationship with this community? Are you a regular reader of the forum? Or did you just happen to revisit this place during this controversy?

Used to lurk and read a while back, even without an account. Forgot the place existed after I got swept up in life, then remembered and came back, saw the announcement, and here I am.

I put a lot of value in preservation of things, even if they seem mundane. I can't even imagine the sort of feelings I'd have about this if I had been an active poster within the community. I can understand when someone might want to be forgotten, even if I disagree, but I find making the decision on the behalf of others who don't agree with it is a careless misstep. The thing with communities is, they aren't just one person. You want everyone on board with a decision, or at least most people.

My take on this is that I don't really care as long as Space Goat has this all backed up so that it could theoretically be made available for some of us to reminisce over in the future. As long as it all still exists I'm fine with it. I can definitely understand why people who used their real names would want it scrubbed from being publicly available. But yeah, if Goat just deleted it all for good, no going back ever, that would suck.

Someone has it all backed up. This site has been around for so long, its probably been trawled and scraped hundreds of times over the years.

I think the last time I did anything special for April Fools was in 2015 or 2016, and I honestly doubt I can possibly top either of my last two pranks. Most of the April Fools day stuff I come across online is incredibly lame and uncreative. Better to not even bother if you can't do anything unique or interesting.
