A little over 2 months in the making, it's finally done, and I couldn't be more happier to not have to spend any more weekends working my ass off to get this beast released. This project ended up taking way more time than I ever planned it would, but I suppose that's really my fault as I spent far more time than any human should have editing these clips together.

I think some of you may be a little surprised by the 170mb file size. It was decided pretty early on in the project that we were going to make this movie outside of 3dmm and distribute it in AVI or WMV format. I think the real driving factor for this decision was because it was too much work to remove unused v3dmm models from the film, not to mention the sounds and music that we didn't want as well. It also allowed us to give you superior sound quality, and have some fun synchronizing the clips and music without having to worry about different computers playing at different speeds. I'm very happy with the decision and wonder if this will give anyone any ideas to make their next movie a hybrid 3dmm/WMV like this one.

Some of the clips were compiled first in 3dmm by Ben, but all of them went through a very detailed editing process using Windows Movie Maker 2.

The movie is broken up into 22 separate WMV files, and has a playlist included so you can play them all at once in the correct order. I've also included a text file that lists more detailed results for each nominee and category. Please extract the entire folder to your desktop before playing.

The only requirement to watch this is a somewhat uptodate version of Windows Media Player, or at least any media player that can read WMV files. I don't expect many people will have any problems playing this, since Microsoft has done a fairly decent job distributing their proprietary codec (even if it was for all the wrong reasons), but if you do have issues, I recommend you update your Windows Media Player installation to version 9 or higher.

Special thanks goes out to all of those who helped make this movie possible. I'd like to thank Tuna Hematoma obviously for handling the nomination process (even if he did put in a few prank nominees without anyone noticing), Aaron Haynes for helping him out, and HMC for creating the trophy used throughout the movie.

I'd also like to thank Digital Taco and Demented Ferret for helping me get a hold of a few hard to find expansions so I could get screenshots for them, and Ben asked me to also give thanks to Warren Wagner and Richard Bevis for constant encouragement and inspiration.

EDIT: This was FANTASTIC! Best Awards movie so far. What blew me away the most was the editing, holy shit. Pure awesomeness. This is how the future Awards movies should be made. Kinda bummed about not winning (DAMN YOU DAN!) but it's alright, I was pretty close. The music was brilliant! Congratulations to everyone who won and a very special thanks to Space Goat and Ben Rice, you guys did a splendid job! Can't wait until the 2006 Awards.

That was awesome. Even though there weren't that many movies released last year, this was a nice approach to doing the awards. I think it's safe to say that we should do it this way every year.

The format this was in was AWESOME.

Easily best out of the past few years, The only thing I might add next time is examples of what some of the people did, photoshops, voice acting, etc.

The format was great too, for skipping through. Slider bar made it easy, no having to go from the start to hear the music etc. And if you didn't care about a category, just skip to the next one! Awesome setup.

I never thought about making hybrid movies like this. Well, I have... I did make my Magic 2 preview like this, but yeah for a full movie it would kind of feel like cheating.

Just yeah, well done Goat and Ben, this was brilliant.

Also, which program did you use to screen capture? One of the most awesome things too was watching 3dmm movies full screen, without the 3dmm GUI around it!

I dunno if it was the >6fps fade transitions, the precision timing, the excellent audio quality, and all the other things WMP has over 3DMM, but that's gotta be the best edited thing I've ever seen done for this community. You weren't kidding about the amount of time you spent on this; only some redundancy in award categories and nominations slowed the thing down with repetitious clips or variations on the same theme. There were some insanely well-chosen shots that were insanely well-timed with changeovers or music swells. The time bomb from Derelict hitting 0 just as the Best Movie nomination reel ends comes to mind foremost, but there were others.

2005 was an offbeat year, a low key year, a darker and less powerful year than 2004 or 2003. The community's last iteration peaked with the end of the 2004 Summer Film Fest, with the hype, response, and delivery of Pamela and SATANIK within a day of each other; I don't think I've ever seen the community as excited or involved as they were then, so I'm placing that as the high spot. If and when this community goes out, I think it'll happen with quite a bang, considering how much work has been put into all the projects that are gathering dust from the collective ennui of the past year or so (Vlarion and a few other points of interest notwithstanding).

But I digress. 2005 was rough, patchy, and definitely dry in terms of major events like REDUX, Ghost in the Shell, JDR Revival, Pamela, SATANIK, Moderately Confused, or Vlarion. But in a way, it kind of got back to where 3dmm started in the first place: low-effort experimentation, fun and meaningless exercises is entertainment. Hiatus movies, quick comedic musings, minimalist ideas. I think v3dmm has influenced people to move away from huge epics and just play around and have fun. There's less incentive to raise the bar, outdo previous visuals, compete for prestige and respect. The stakes are astronomically higher than they were a few years ago, and the demand is lower. I have no doubt movies like Legacy of Saradomin, D3MONS, Ninja Gaiden 2, Powerplay 2, Rayman, Ringworld, or, dare I say it, The Detective would rekindle some of that old involvement and excitement, but right now, I don't mind coasting on some fun, disposable entertainment and concept shorts.
