TL;dr:
1. Collect more BRender versions, pester companies to get more BRender games open sourced.
2. Make a modernized-3DMM version. Minimal changes, just get it working on Windows 10/11, fix bugs that popped up because of changes in windows over the last 27 years.
3. Make a 3DMM But Better version. (I am, of course, calling it Movie Maker Plus). Drop the 256-color limitation, native video export, easy importing of new textures/objects, replace the rendering, new tools for making movies, etc.

Any updates?

It's a palette. That's the palette for 3dmm during development.

So Does That Mean, 3dmm Was Made In Windows 3.1? And Made For Windows 95?

Yeah, as I said in the quote, Windows 95 didn't exist at the time of development. Keep in mind this was around 1993-1994.

*My bad, that screenshot is probably from NT 3.52. That's the earliest version of Windows that can run 3DMM.

So, were the original 3D objects used to generate the default scenes / camera angles actually in the source (they aren't standing out to my eyes)? If so, please let me know how I can get at them. I'd love to import those into Blender or Unreal and actually make real camera pans of the default scenes rather than trying to project and stitch together screengrabs of the various angles.

I was just thinking about 3dmm so I looked it up (I figured something good would happen since people are still using this program and working on converting it) and already have it installed. I was surprised it worked so easily, so much nostalgia .

EDIT: So how do we apply the expansions?

Thank you...I wonder if you guys could make a new feature where you could hear the music no matter where you stop the movie so that you don't have to waste a bunch of time listening from where it started. It would save a lot of time making movies

EDIT: What about v3dmm, would it still work? Cause I definitely want to start doing mods when I get the time

I am just finding out about this open source release now. Wow! Super cool. I can't wait to start messing around with the new stuff that eventually comes. I don't suppose there's anything available yet to try out?

"I didn't know if it would happen, but frankly I thought it was worth a serious try," Foone said when I ask if they thought their original tweet would lead to anything. "I had asked around before and [Microsoft] hadn't been able to find [the code]... it turns out it was deeply buried in some archive of an archive of an archive. Apparently someone had to pull it off backup tapes to actually get it!"
Damn, what are the chances? That Microsoft would be willing to do this, that someone at Microsoft would be willing to dig that much for it, and that there was actually something to be found buried that deep, such luck.

Foone carries a fair bit of internet clout these days, as opposed to being some rando asking in 2005, which makes a world of difference, I'd say

If 3dmm is open source now does that basically mean that one could release a 3dmm movie commercially? Assuming no mods are used that are ripped from video games or whatever, and no copyright music/sound effects of course. But like someone could make a tv show that aired on cable and used the vanilla actors and whatnot? Or maybe that was always "fair use" if you think of 3dmm as an animating program rather than a video game? Like nobody would be sued for using default samples in a DAW.

Doesn't seem like something anyone would attempt now, if only because of the low resolution, but I could definitely see 3dmm becoming like an alternative to "professional" 3d animating software in the future with just a few updated features.

That’s a rather good question. It does seem like that would be the case with the MIT License.

Right now there’s only 3dmm forever. it’s very just vanilla 3D Movie Maker in a zip folder. I’m sure something big will eventually happen, it’s gonna be a long time before that ever happens as there’s been next to no progress. Maybe Plop and I will just learn C++ and do it ourselves lol.
