I do find those numbers surprising though. Maybe they're counting people who buy games for their kids?

That definitely might account for the second one. Still, I'm sure they're not considering the amount of games played by all these gamers. They could be just asking 40 year olds and 15 year olds alike "Do you ever play video games?" I think if they asked them "how many hours a week do you play video games," then it would seem they are more for children, but still, I think that could be said of any entertainment medium.

I would agree that all 'entertainment' is escapism at some level, but I disagree with calling it inherently childish. I think there's a difference between art and entertainment, even though they're usually in the same mediums. Art is the highest expression of culture, so to say that it is childish seems as ridiculous to me as saying 'culture is childish.'
