I don't even know how to access the archive from 3dmm.com. I only get there through Google.

I think there is a little confusion over what the archive is. It's essentially just a bare bones layout of the forum made for search engine crawlers. There aren't any threads in the archive that aren't also on the normal forum.

The only thing I can think of that it could have been used for is improved viewing of threads on portable devices.

So turning it off would just cause the threads not to appear on search engines?

Off is fine, who browses 3dmm when on their phone anyways?
We're all like 20+ here now. If this was a filing cabinet it'd have been shredded and burnt by now hah.

It's off. FYI, in the past you accessed it by clicking on an "Archive" link in the footer of the layout, next to Contact Us and RSS Feed.

first time I tried my phone blocked it saying the content was inappropriate and I'd have to call the phone company to unlock 18+ content. So I'm sat at work asking on my mobile "Hi could you unlock my internet to access adult websites please." at least my colleague found it funny...
