AIM substitutes?

Programs I can use my AIM account with. Preferably ones that let me keep my font the same.

Trillian is OK
Pidgin is pretty cool, it's what I use now.
We use PSI at work. It's not as user friendly, it's more for network admins to monitor their employees.

I use Pidgin. You can also get on AIM using your gmail account within your browser. I don't know about the fonts there, though.

Digsby
Quote:
* One combined buddy list for all your AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber, and Facebook Chat Accounts.
* Manage multiple conversations with tabbed conversation windows. You can drag tabs out into their own windows for important conversations.
* Rename contacts with an alias so you don't have to remember buddy names like 'giantsfan123'.
* If one of your friends has more than one IM account you can combine them into a single merged contact to eliminate duplicate buddies.
* Multitask while you chat. Minimize the IM window and you see popups of new IM's. Best of all, you can reply right from the popup and get back to what you were doing.
* Log conversation history and find the information you need our search-enabled log viewer.
* And so much more.

you can auto seperate friends into groups of availability. digsby rules.

Ya use Digsby. DeadAIM is also really good but it costs $5. Gaim sucks huge balls. Although you can't change your IM font with it, most of the styling features for sending IMs have never worked. But that's the only downside.

Or if you want an in-browser AIM, like just a webpage, use meebo.com. Really sweet.

I'm using DeadAIM with an old version of AIM, and it works when I can get it to start, but a lot of times AIM just won't start up. It only works like once per three times I restart my computer.

There's like a sweet spot in AIM downgrading where it works perfectly. Also if you pirated deadaim that might be the problem, I've heard a lot of people have trouble getting the pirated version to work.

Well, the same version worked fine for five years on XP, so I'm assuming Vista is the problem. As long as AIM actually opens, everything works.

yeah, Vista rocks, especially since SP1. the only early problems with it was developers not coming out with Vista drivers quick enough.

I like Pidgin (formally GAIM) and the fact that it is open source. Digsby looks pretty good, I've never heard of that one before. I didn't like Miranda, and I used Trillian for a long time, but it has become too bloated (not to mention ugly) in my opinion. Also, I prefer my IM clients to match my OS. I don't care to skin them.

just so you know, he meant "formerly"... Pidgin is an improvement over Gaim, which is what other people were talking shit about. Even though Gaim was fine.
edit: although it would still be called gaim if it werent for lawsuits

Yeah, I 100% agree. When I first started trying out third-party clients about 3-4 years ago, I hated GAIM too, and ended up choosing Trillian. I used Trillian for about 2-3 years, but about a year and a half ago, I built a new PC with Vista and decided to try something else. Pidgin won me over.
