Just watched it. That was pretty cool. I didn't care much for the story. The ending left me feeling kind of cheated. Like the whole movie looked like it was heading somewhere interesting and then...didn't. Also, the quality of the video was really grainy and the sound erratic, making it really hard to tell what people were saying a lot of the time.

The quality of the acting seemed to vary. Your character sounded fine when conversing with other characters, but the narration sounded really flat and underacted. I did, however, like the costuming. All the characters were dressed and acted in a very noir fashion. Except for maybe the girl. She seemed very out of place for some reason. I liked how your character looked, though; you make a pretty convincing detective. All of that was helped along by the directing, which was superb, and was the shining point of the whole film. Overall, it was worth a watch. I liked it.

I'm not a movie critic, though. The people who know what they're talking about will probably make my review sound extremely Ben Rice-esque.

Thanks for the review HMC. The movie was based mostly upon Drew and I walking around Wesleyan University campus going "See that over there? That'd make one KICK-ASS shot." So we decided to make a movie mostly based upon visuals. The story came next. It took us a 4 days to write the original draft. Then we gave it to an English teacher there and she gave us pointers and stuff, mostly on the grammer. Then came the time to film. We filmed practically everyday in our spare time, which wasn't alot. I don't think I changed out of that stupid outfit for at least 5 days near the end. We rushed parts, and some of the edditing, sound, and other stuff was sacrificed. Such as the Voice overs, which were done rushed the last day of editting. The script had more stuff explained, Like who killed Rufus Rock, why he says "Don't leave!", and why Stephen must get out of town. There was quite a few good lines that we needed to cut in order to make it fit. I think that the script was better than the movie. The visuals of the movie were good, but took away from the power of the lines. When you're readig the script, you're like, 'DAMN! That's clever!'. But instead you either don't care, or are like 'DAMN! I couldn't hear what he said.' Also, I appoligize for the shittyness in quality of the video. I didnt watch it before I posted it, but SHIT! It is bad. The sound's all fucked up and shit resolution. But, yeh... woo.

That was seriously awesome, dude. I was in love with the visuals and music, mainly, but the story was not bad either, albeit a tad confusing. I also liked the acting, for the most part.

I did not like the narration voice acting (and the girl's acting was decent at best), but I don't care; the visuals+music were enough for me. Great job.

P.S. I suggest using divx for better quality.

There are a lot of criticisms because I picked out every little thing that I noticed as I was watching it, whereas for the observations I only started around the Holden meeting and kind of forgot, then I started writing the All Together bit. Long story short, this is a really disorganized post.

At the bottom are shots I really really liked and the time indexes they can be found at.

Criticisms:
-The angles in the Rufus meeting sucked. There was no tension there at all. Needed closeups, and I'd have put the camera looking slightly up at both of them. The profile shot of the detective was blech.
-Your monologue is a little rushed in places. Great lines get delivered as if you're trying to say them quickly so they'll fit in an allotted period of time. A few stumbles, too -- some of these definitely needed second takes.
-Needs a high quality version. The h.264 codec is fantastic for this.
-Source audio is bad in places. Low/no budget film, so understandable, but ADR would've been appreciated in the stairwell.
-She really doesn't seem drunk. The accent is pretty good, but the acting is a little off. She also seems taller than you, which is kinda silly looking, BUT YOU CAN HARDLY HELP THAT LOL.
-Angles at the top of the staircase with the girl aren't all that great either. :/
-Some of the detective's dialogue is really sanctimonious. "The crimes you committed were immoral and wrong." C'mon, he can't be a lowlife drunk AND a whitebread stiff.
-The gunfire in the graveyard being done with just sound effects didn't work all that well. The music is layed on a little thick here and in a few other places where it's reused.
-Heading to Julia's grave twice would've been better if he'd visited the first time much earlier in the movie. Twice in five minutes doesn't work very well.

Observations that stood out:
-The shot with the scotch being poured into the glass was seriously awesome. Should've cut before the glass was taken away though, right as Holden is picking it up.
-The meeting with Holden is much better than the other two questionings.
-Holden is a really good actor. His smirk at ~17:11 is fantastic.
-The overall feel of it is pretty spot-on for film noir. The costumes were excellent, though you could've gone with a little less stubble.

All together
For the most part, the dialogue and script are excellent. There are a few embarrassing lines (and line deliveries), but there are some real gems here as well. I liked the meeting with Holden where he internalizes one thing and says the opposite.
The revelation is extremely well-done, with the multiple callback shots of him drinking. He had to know, though, that if he went back to Julia's gravestone he'd be ambushed. Also: Why wasn't he killed before this, during the investigation? He's going around talking to people who'd probably know he did it. Do they figure it out afterwards or something?
As far as capturing the time period, this is the most effective part of the movie. You guys did a GREAT job getting the 40s noir feel if not the prohibition era itself, though some of your actors occasionally look a little out of place.
This is definitely something to be proud of, even though it's somewhat unbalanced, a little rough in areas, and my balls kind of itch. Great work, this obviously has a lot of effort put into it.

Great shots:
1:47
1:50
2:55
3:00
3:07
3:16
5:06
8:50
9:03
11:41
12:10
12:16
13:22
13:32 (wow)
13:45 (also wow)
16:06
18:54
18:58 (I like the handheld feel here when the door opens)
19:05 (this whole sequence is great)
25:30

Russel, do you have a better quality version?

Not being able to rewind or fast forward is very irritating, and I'd be willing to download a bigger file if it'll get me a better quality movie.
