The photoshop one looks like shit.

I don't know much about photography, but I don't like it. At all. In fact it sucks.

I love the original, and the photoshopped one has it's charms.. but it's true, it's just not as cool. Still quite awesome for a photograph

EDIT: The larger version of the PS'ed pic is quite good as well!

I asked my ex-girlfriend who knows a lot about photography and is a good pho-to-gra-pher to criticise the photo and sent her a link to your picture:

Quote:
First of all, I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking at. and if there was something I was supposed to be looking at, there's a big blury object right infront of it. The skylight things are terribly distracting. They take the viewers eye all over the place and make it even more confusing. The contrast is horrible too, along with the composition.
You welcome.

I would have to disagree, in the minimized version. There is a very evident diamond shape for the eyes to follow, from the bottom of the telephone to either of the diagonal bars above it, and then to the topmost intersection.

If the eye first hits centered on the image, it will still follow a path (Along the middle, cross-like intersection) to the bottom of the phone, and then continue in the diamond shape. It's very symmetrical in areas, yet slightly off-center still. I like to think of that as a bit of an artistic touch.

While not quite in tune with 'the golden rule,' it's still very visually interesting (I really like the texture of the holes in the receiving end of the phone!). Might not appeal to all, but I find it fascinating

take the original and resize it smaller. It's much better when viewed as a whole, then again, my browser does it anyway

If you keep balance and composition in mind, I think this image serves well as a throw off for the two rules.
I knew exactly what the image was as soon as I saw it.
The skylights do throw off the focus of the phone, but when you look at the phone, the way it is seemingly straight where as everything else is tilted to the side.. yeah that's a cool effect.

I think the photo would look better if it were taken the right way up i.e Not on a slant
Other than that, the lighting and the windows look really cool.

I'm not trying to be some kind of expert photographer here, I just took a picture, and thought it looked pretty neat and original. I know nothing about photography, and this is probably the first picture I've ever taken, that wasn't of people, or something but.. yeah, thanks for the advice and stuff.

I agree, the contrast between the skylight and the rest of the picture is so great that it pulls your attention to the lighter of the two, which, unfortunately, is the skylight; the design scatters the viewers focal point all over the photograph. The phone is also too blurry to catch the viewers attention upon first glance (also lose the posterizing effect). The subject of the photo is quite appealing though (if only it werent for that damn skylight). As far as placement goes, I feel that you did well, the angle of the phone would bring the viewers attention up through the middle of the photograph and it would blossom from there, but again, the skylight ruins it. I hope this helps on your future photographs.

3/5
