In that case, I support government baptism. It shouldn't be considered a religious ceremony, and everyone should be able to do it.

Marraige is a church thing. Just because it's become a social norm among couples doesn't mean that it should be made a secular issue. That's what civil unions are for, and if you don't think that they're equal enough, use the rules in your favor and petition the government. I think that's why the devorce rate is so high; a couple can marry very easily with little consideration, and then decide it won't work out because they don't have the balls to stick it out. They don't have any support from a church, they dont' have any consequences from a church, there's no guilt. Most people who marry in a church, and attend that church will make the marrage work for at least the first few shitty years before deciding it won't work. I don't even like organized religion, but I've seen the difference a church community makes on a marraige.

OPEC threatens the American economy. If they're going to make it harder for someone to live, they had better be able to defend themselves. It's a law of nature, and being a libritarian, I suppiort the laws of nature whoelheartedly.

I am not wealthy because I am an eighteen year old. When I was a small child, my family was poor as dirt. Mommy married my daddy and went to college after squeezing me out, and for those eight years while she was at school, we were living on the scraps our bills left over. We lived in shitty trailers and apartments in the middle of East Texas (nowhere) and it was Hell. The family car was a little Isuzu pickup with one bench seat. Mind you, I have two little brothers. My dad worked construction and a sand/gravel plant. Soon enough though, thanks to the opportunity given to us to thrive by a free society, my mother now makes a couple hundred grand a year, and my dad was able to go to school. I'm going to save the money I make in the Army, as I won't be spending any of it, invest it into a life while I'm at school (paid for by the government), and hopefully raise a family. Thanks American dream.

Except the American government gives all kinds of bonuses to married couples, such as being able to fill out joint tax forms and stuff, and does not give the same bonuses to people who get civil unions.

Fuck socialism. Fuck welfare. Fuck people who can't save their damn money. Some people lack the ability (disabled, etc.) actually need it, but freedom of commerce, including who you want to hire, who you want to cater to, and freedom to buy or sell whatever the hell you want is ideal. It's civilized nature. Everyone has a chance to be successful, and if you don't have what it takes, you can wash dishes, dig ditches, make food, or rot. Deal with it.
This is pretty easy to say and pretty fucking amazingly hard to do in real life. Once you end up on the streets or in poverty there's pretty much absolutely no way out again. Let's say, for instance, you are living on a shoestring. You come from a very poor family. You have no insurance of any type, a wife, and 2 children. You do not have the money to go to college or to afford the clothes and training for a white-collar job. Your wife has even less experience and is pregnant with another child. Suddenly you die. What happens to your family? Let's say we have the same situation except you live alone. One day your apartment burns down with all your posessions and almost all your money inside. Now you live on the streets. You cannot shower or wash your clothes and you are soon fired from your job. You can apply for another, but who would hire a filthy, unwashed, unshaved, half-starved miscreant in layers of month-old, flea-filled clothes? Once you enter the streets you are pretty much stuck there for life. You should really read an account of someone who actually has lived on the streets before you start making all kind of arbritary judgements.

Considering practically every society has a form of marriage, NO, it is not 'a church thing'.

Good, than you would agree that marriage should have no bearing
within the law what so ever and that it should rest soley in religion
and the personnal beliefs of those who wish to get married, correct?

No man, this just isn't true. Marriage these days is not just a church thing. You don't have to be Christian to get married. Jesus, you can't seriously be this fucking stupid.

Damn, this stuff is still going?

Anyway, throwing my 2 cents in about Social Security:

I gotta agree somewhat with Drug. I don't think Social Security should be as all encompassing as it is. I think people who can't support themselves (disabled) and people who are forced to stop working by the government (elderly) deserve it. But the thing spun way out of control and grew into a monster beyond what FDR had in his wildest dreams. If it hadn't been an overall social pension system as opposed to the safety net it was supposed to be, we wouldn't be in this fix now.

So I'm opposed to Bush's privitization. I say slash the benefits and recipients.

Truth is, the only reason marriage is a state institution is because of a violation of the establishment clause back when basically everyone in America was Christian. Now it's become a social norm, but it's comparable to the government performing infant baptisms in connection with receiving a social security number and birth certificate. Everyone needs a social security number and a birth certificate, but baptism is a totally irrelevant religious rite.

Marriage, likewise, is a covenant between two people and the deity the worship, which in our culture also connotes certain social and economic rights. And while the government has an obligation to protect those social and economic rights, it has no business presiding over the religious covenant.

The government needs to stop issuing marriage certificates altogether, and provide only those services which are in its jurisdiction. And while one might argue that the universality of marriage in all cultures means that it transcends religion, the truth is that marriage is universal because religion is universal. Every marriage rite, whether it be a tribal ritual in Africa, a Buddhist ceremony in Thailand, or a Protestant wedding here in the States, is inexorably connected to the religious traditions of the people. The very idea of a secular marriage is a fairly new invention, and it was really only created because nonreligious people wanted the benefits of marriage and didn't much care about the extraneous religious baggage.
