Always wanted to make my own RPG. I'm good with pixel art and animation, just not game design, coding and such. Maybe one day!

You really don't need to know any coding or technical stuff to use RPG Maker, it's all programmed for you. Pretty much all you really need to do is make the maps, design the fights and write the dialogue. You don't even need to make your own sprites or tiles if you don't want to, it comes with a bunch of default Dragon Warrior-esque ones, then people have uploaded thousands online that you can import. It supports a basic trigger event system where you can have little events take place (Like when the player walks here, an NPC walks up and delivers dialogue then spins in a circle, walks away and disappears), there's also various graphical effects you can add, etc. It's all really simple and uses plain language, but if you want to get into the guts you can also use Ruby to program your own stuff into the game like custom battle mechanics or whatever.

What if you made a 3DMM game in RPG Maker?

I get what you’re saying but the RPG Maker community is way bigger than the 3dmm one. Although I think the idea that they’ll play your game - yeah, it’s way less likely than hitting play on a YouTube. But the payoff is the fun you have making it.

If you don’t want to buy RPG Maker there is also the Hamster Republic RPG engine, which is free and DOS-based I believe. I havent used it in about two decades but I remember really enjoying it. I don’t have time to fiddle with it but I checked out the page of games made with it and it looked like there was some cool stuff.

My favorite thing about it is it’s pixel-based, so the aesthetic is maintained quite well, even though it is quite limited in what you can do (character size and detail, for example.)

RPG Maker is great, but does anyone remember Adventure Game Studio? Compcat made a 3dmm game made of it and released it on the movie database. https://www.3dmm.com/showthread.php?t=53926
