20/21 Lockdown Movies

When COVID first started kicking off and we were all cooped up, one of the ways I handled it was to start catching up on all the "essential" movies I'd been meaning to get around to.

So although Network came out in 1976, because I watched it (and fuckin loved it) in June 2020 I'd consider it a "New to me" 2020 movie and now I'll probably always associate it with the pandemic - plus, the whole populist hysteria element to the plot definitely "hit different"

So YOU - first off, what new films did you enjoy between March 2020 and today? Doesn't matter if it was or wasn't actually a new 20/21 release, just had to have been new to you.

And also - did any films "hit different" in the context of, yknow, all the shit outside?

Around May 2020 was when I decided to watch as many of the remaining They Shoot Pictures top 50 as I could, and a bunch of those really stick out in my mind as lockdown movies. La Dolce Vita (a great movie loved by cool people) and Au Hasard Balthazar especially. I’m still on 49/50 despite literally owning the last one (Ugetsu) hahaha what a dummy!!!

Then the month after I got talked into watching all of Revolutionary Girl Utena. It was pretty good

I'm pretty sure the last movie I watched was Downfall, aka the Hitler movie that has that one scene. It was really good. I like how claustrophobic most of the movie was. After a while you feel like you're in the bunker with him, hanging out with all the guys. I guess that since March 2020, we've all been Hitler in the bunker, listening to the allied bombs drop overhead. Oh yeah, the action sequences ruled too, though I'm glad they were rare.

Also reading about the guy who played Hitler made me find out about the iffland ring which is a cool concept.

Great movie! I can definitely see the bunker stuff being close to home mid-lockdown

Big two for me were Jaws which I organically decided to rewatch and was immediately hit with a bunch of Boris Johnson / Mayor of Amity parallels (its safe to go back to the beach and spend money!!! Go for a swim!!) and watching Black Panther after Boseman died. Normally do not dig Marvel stuff at all but at least that film felt like it did some new stuff. Also smoked beforehand which never hurts!

1 time, and it was really good (like most Tom Hanks movies). The ending was terrific.

apparently they made it even more gritty by having tom fock wilson via a hole on the bottom of the ball, the one he uses to attach it to the boat at the end. one silhouetted cave love scene being cut from the movie and any other shot that insinuated it removed, its one of the biggest movie controversies that they dont want you to know!
