Call me whatever names you want but

Listening to Everywhere at the End of Time makes me sad. Just, the concept of dementia making you suffer as you lose your happiest memories and stuff.... .

One of the most saddening thoughts about it is that the final track has voices in it, but the representation of them shows how the listener wouldn't be able to remember what human voices would sound like in the final stages. I know I sound like a coward or a wimp right now, but jeez.. it's sad.

everywhere at the end of time is a great art project/concept. I could never listen to it personally though (because the concept isn’t enough for me to ‘enjoy’ it as music)

Everywhere at the end of time is not music, its an audio experience. It is what it is, I guess. This project is not enjoyable like music is enjoyable, since it is not music, so the only enjoyment you could get from it is from its meaning. And while it is more meaningful than than your average noise album, that's basically saying a bowl is deeper than a puddle. Like yeah it is, but the improvement is not that much. This is a 6 and a half hour experience, and all it says for that time is "Dementia's bad dude, like its really bad, like its REALLY bad, like it'd REALLY suck to have it." And like yeah, dementia is bad enough to earn 6 and a half hours of that, but it really doesn't say more than that. While I'm sure Leyland Kirby knows a lot about dementia, it doesn't really reflect in the art. It feels like Kirby only put a small amount of his actual knowledge of the ailment into the work. And another thing, I don't think he actually put any of the money he got from this project into dementia research. Like he might have done it in private, but I ain't really confident about that. He did a LOT for dementia awareness, but that feels like an accident, y'know?

TLDR: EATEOT has more to say than most noise records, but that isn't saying much, and I personally don't think Leyland Kirby is very passionate about dementia awareness/research. And now I'm questioning if this was actually an invitation to go on a long critique of this record, but I already typed all this shit out using the quick reply thing and I'm just gonna post it now i guess.

My grandma had Alzheimer's, and eventually she couldn't remember how to eat (or when she remembered, she wouldn't feel hungry even if she was starving). My mom would have to fly out to California every 2-3 years to help her.

This artist had Alzheimer's, too. His name was William Utermohlen. His art is fascinating, in a creepy kind of way. I took a 10-minute compilation of his art and sped it up by 4X (so it was quicker to watch), then added music. Here it is.

He drew a self-portrait every year for 10 years after his Alzheimer's diagnosis. You can see him forgetting how to draw, in his final stages. He still remembers shading but by the final year of his drawing age he barely remembers how to draw his own face. He didn't die for 7 years, even after the final portrait was made. Imagine having to live through that.

Dementia is sad and scary. The only thing you have besides the present moment is memories and when those are taken from you, you almost have nothing. Life at a certain point would be nothing but random colors and sounds, except there are people around you that you know nothing about watching you forget everything. What was the point of living at that point? Everything you have accomplished and done is now lost forever.

I'm into ambient stuff but I never liked Caretakers. Not too many melodies that catch the ear, most of it is based around the intricate textures in the sound.
I get it all has a deeper meaning, but I like to bring my own interpretations to ambient music. Having a strict, pre-applied concept sorta detracts from the experience for me.
