Nicolas Winding Refn thread

Anyone like his work? I've watched most of it, including his early gangster series that wasn't very much like his current projects. I finished Too Old to Die Young a few weeks ago at the recommendation of a friend. I had tried to watch it when it was first released but the stupidly slow pacing made me give up back then. I stuck it out this time but was largely annoyed for most of it. Still, a fairly compelling director if not a bit pretentious.

Only God Forgives was the weakest of his major releases. And he has some odd penchant for incest. Bronson is really entertaining and probably Tom Hardy's best work. Neon Demon is the closest to the plodding aesthetic shit like TOtDY. Cliff Martinez on synths is great for these movies, and like Angelo is to David Lynch.

The cars were the shittiest part and your uncle is a failure. Tell him that he nearly ruined what's otherwise a fantastic movie.

This is pretty cool although unfortunately i gotta agree with sapone on the choice of cars.
I did some work for the chap that provided most of the prop guns and artillery for the band of brothers and saving private bown.
His house looked completely nornal but when you go inside its filled with like bren guns n shit

I like Valhalla Rising a lot for the sick action sequences, a lot of it is kinda boring meandering psychedelic stuff, which is fine, but only tolerable on first viewing. Every subsequent viewing just skip skraight to the awesome violence. Also Mads Mikkelsen one of my fav actors

Pusher trilogy pretty good. Drive pretty good. Idk he's not my favorite director or anything, I rarely feel the need to revisit any of his movies except Valhalla. In fact i dont think ive seen any of the others more than once except maybe Pusher.

Bronson was really good, best tom hardy performance for sure

If u like Pusher trilogy maybe check out Raven is Flying trilogy it's kind of the same sort of thing but in viking age scandinavia.

Also I liked his character in death Stranding.

The first time I watched Valhalla Rising in its entirety, I was drunk on liquor at 4am or so and fighting back sleep every 10 minutes. It made for a bizarre experience, because the movie itself is weird, very ambient, and I was in a semi-lucid state, and intoxicated. The same thing happened with Dragged Across Concrete but I did fall asleep about 15 minutes in, so my only recollection of it is Mel Gibson on a fire escape for a while and for all I know that's totally wrong.

Loved Drive and Neon Demon*, mostly loved Bronson, and was mixed on Only God Forgives but the great parts are REALLY great. I love Mikkelsen but haven’t seen any of his films with Refn, I should fix that!

Didn’t like Too Old To Die Young at all outside of some individual scenes/any time Billy Baldwin was on screen. Way too long and completely overwrought.

*went to a free screening of this put on by a film magazine and just before it was about to start Refn and Elle Fanning came out of NOWHERE to introduce it and then did a Q&A afterwards. It was awesome, especially because it might be my favourite Refn I’ve seen

I liked Too Old to Die Young mainly because my friend and I incessantly quote the gay rape porn audition scene. That episode seems to be the stand-out of the series and it makes sense he chose it to be screened at Cannes.

"Too Old to Die Young" is just about the dumbest title I've ever heard. It sounds like one of the 00Dee Boned movies.
