Recommend books to me.

I'm getting back into reading and don't even know where to start. Here are topics I'm interested in, if you please:

-Not big on fiction, but dark, gritty fantasy or sci fi is cool; ideally something lesser known as I'm not really interested in George Martin crap or Tolkien, even though he rules. Something adult and gory/seedy.
-WW2, but honestly I'm a little burnt on it unless there is a really good book that I can't miss
-Italian organized crime, but I'll settle for other ethnicities
-Roman history, especially with respect to war and technology
-Interesting lifestyles/people inserted into niche groups, like outlaw bikers or something
-Off grid living, especially useful references and guides

As a start.

The Lorax. Dark adult fantasy with gore and torture. Only those with stone hearts can sit through it.

Sci fi: Dan Simmon's Hyperion books. If you haven't read them, i strongly recommend them. I would be surprised if you haven't read them though.
Oh and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy for some comedy sci fi, by Douglas Adams. Incredible books

Roman history: The Cicero trilogy by Robert Harris.

Robert Harris writes fantastic historical novels too, mainly on WW2 but on other eras in history. I recommend all of his books.

Roman history: I, Claudius. by Robert Graves. Written in 1934 and its brilliant. Robert Graves also wrote a stunning book about his time serving in the British army in WW1 called "goodbye to all that"

WW2: Operation Mincemeat is incredible. Infact, anything by Ben MacIntyre.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mincemeat - for the actual story, but i recommend you don't read much there and just get the book. It's stunning how unbelievable but true it is.
