YouTube Embed Optimization

Yo yo yo,

So I don't know about everybody else - but embedded YouTube videos makes my 3dmming experience slow, chuggy, and annoying.

I didn't really care that much until recently. I avoided threads over-encumbered with YouTube vids. But now I'm making one. And it is frustrating.
___________________________________________
Primary points:

1) I cannot scroll, or scrolling lags, while YouTube videos load up their player/thumbnails. Once done, everything is fine.

2) If I actually do get to scroll down, it jumps around while the videos "eat the space" they need and the board adjusts.

2) If I reply to a thread, or the page refreshes due to some interacting - it laods everything AGAIN. I have to deal with that chuggy shit AGAIN.

___________________________________________

I'm not much for how this all works, but I've been on forums where this is not an issue. A couple things they do different:

1) Spoiler-esque tags for videos, so it won't load unless you click (SHOW VIDEO) - I think this is the best solution. So I can choose which YouTube embeds to waste my time loading.

2) I guess better code or some shit I dunno, fuck it.

What do you guys think? Am I alone in this?

i do like how many places use the Show Video button which when clicked drops it down instantly. reddit grabs the screenshot for preview, which i assume is possible?

for me in firefox even on a full page of videos it only takes a max of like 2 seconds to load, but its enough to feel slightly sluggish, not enough for me to care though really

I browse with 40 posts per page, and for example, page 1 of "cool songs thread" takes about 10-15 seconds to become scrollable. I can see "Loading youtube.com234jh23i4" at the bottom of my Chrome window as it parses/processes/fucksthedog.

Sites like reddit and facebook cache thumbnails on their own server. That requires a lot of work on the server side that I don't really have time for. I'm pretty much limited to client-side only solutions.

It's possible to do spoiler tags for video embeds totally client-side, but they wouldn't have a thumbnail. I don't think you guys want that.

Also, in regards to this...

Are you sure it's the videos causing this and not the images? The video tags all have fixed sizes, so their height is already known to the browser before they are even loaded. There's no reason for the browser to adjust the scroll height for them after the initial page load, and I can't reproduce the behavior. I do see this problem with image tags though, but I can't really do much about that, because I don't know their size until the client receives them.

OK, disregard my last post. I just googled and found out that youtube automatically generates thumbnails that I can remote link to and use in the spoiler tags, so this is probably a lot easier than I thought.

I'll try and get it added sometime in the next 3-5 years.

I'm totally fine withouth thumbnails and just hiding the video. Like in some situations that's even ideal - people can title their videos (like SONG NAMES for ALL THE SONG THREADS) so who fucking needs thumbnails.

But like in general and shit then just don't use the spoiler-video-taggy-mijaggy.

I'm sure something like that could be implemented in 1-2 years tops?

Aight no I just get mad and throw my scroll bar around and then it "catches up" or something. If I'm patient I don't notice the "jumping" of position.
