the pixie logo is decent but you couldn't possibly have picked a worse typeface than consolas

I could have picked Papyrus or Comic Sans.

I just got a couple of paying gigs with a orchestra and chorale company out here in Phoenix.

They wanted a couple posters made for two shows they did. For one, they had several rooms where they had different styles of music playing. The audience would choose what rooms they wanted to visit and then at the end would be one production with the whole orchestra and choir.
So I thought that a travel trunk/map would be a good theme.

They used in on their site, PMAZ.org, and their Facebook page.

Well, they liked that design enough that they asked me back for the next show. It's a choose your own adventure style show. It follows this guy, Hicklebee, and after a set or two, the audience texts in votes of where he goes next, and then they do music and advance the plot from there.

This one, the director wanted a more simple look but with a traveler's theme/montage.

Well, then they wanted a program for the first show, so I did this layout that when folded, made the program look like a Passport that would then open into a map.

But then I found out yesterday that they used the Hiicklebee design to reach a broader audience.

and they put it on a billboard. This has me pretty pleased as punch!

Yeah! I had that same issue. I had originally did it like that, but the artistic director didn't like them on or near the countries. He thought it was too obvious. So I did it like he wanted. I've read a lot of things that say you want to try to convince a client to see it your way, but really this was my first, real, paid design as a freelancer, so I was just happy to have the work.

You would totally destroy me at any drawing/art, and I really think you have A LOT of talent in that area, which to me is self-evident...

but as a long time student of design, I can't believe someone would use that fucking logo you made, I mean that shit was acceptable like back in 2003 when 15 year olds at the Ravio forum were looking to scam innocent old timers who had no idea how to use photoshop.

But everything else is migthy fine.

Trust me dude, they never see it your way. The least you can do is advise and then see how they react. If they're still adamant they won't change their mind and you just have to swallow your pride and make something you hate just for the money. Plus, sometimes they're actually right - annoyingly.

Looking at your stuff though, you're getting loads better! It's always super nice to see your work being used and gives you a massive boost of confidence working on other stuff.

Oh, yeah, I just got hired on as a graphic designer for an company that does conventions/exposition services. Just finished up my first month. So far so good. We design and print (mostly in house) aisle banners, directories, agenda boards and posters for different conventions around the US. We just did a dental convention and an assisted living services expo. My coworkers like to call what me make "pretty trash" as it's just used for a weekend and then thrown out.
It's a bit surreal for me as this is like my work history and my education colliding. I'm really enjoying it.

Stuff I've been working on at work.

Client wanted a back panel for their booth. They wanted it themed like the everglades since it's in Florida.

Something I work on in between work tickets to keep busy and practice and distract me from social media and whatnot.

The thing I was working on before the thing above.

Client needed a sign for their wine party, but didn't have any theme or anything for it yet. I spent some time in Kuler picking colors and then did this.
