what i am saying is that, as good as 3d printing gets, there will still be many limitations, both in 3d printing itself and in life in general, that will mean that guns will not be incredibly easy to access as opposed to before. it will still be difficult to access and we are not going to be living in some brave new world of murder.

well...I'll bump this in ten years or so I guess. I hope you're right though!

edit: ok i just saw the video. i can't see that machine being easily available to people for a while. it could definitely happen, but it'll be a while.
I wanna go on a mission with an AR-15 made out of rice krispie and then eat it when I"m done

Izak, you can print metal already with the Ultimaker consumer 3d-printer.

This guy prints tons of stuff with metal fills:

the thing about "3d printing" metal is that the mechanical properties of a material are going to be affected by the manufacturing process by which the material was produced, since the manufacturing process is going to affect the internal composition of the material, the chemical bonds, the fibers, shit like that.

"3d printing" metal pieces that are meant to have the same strength as pieces made using tried-and-true methods, and doing so cheaply enough that people can make them at home, is ... unlikely to happen anytime soon. 3d printing a coin or some thing that is not going to be under mechanical loading is not that big a deal, but 3d printing, say, a hip implant, is something else.

a lot of the cool stuff that is done with 3d printing is still (and will remain) outrageously expensive and time consuming. but it's still done because the alternative (using other manufacturing methods that tend to be more useful for large-scale production) is insanely, obscenely expensive, and thus 3d printing is the better option.

the main advantage of 3d printing is that you can make one piece, because you don't need molds or a complicated industrial process (in theory). making a mold is expensive as hell. molds or machining processes with industrial 'line production' kinda things are pretty awesome and fast, but you need them producing a lot otherwise it's not cost-effective. for prototypes or custom made pieces 3d printing is then the only real option, otherwise it would just be too costly.

this ties a little bit into why 3d printing for consumers is overhyped, because economically speaking, there's plenty of advantages for centralized manufacturing (economies of scale, logistics, productivity) that you would lose by decentralizing manufacturing by having people make their own things at home. the only way those advantages would disappear is if 3d printing is literally magic and you can just make objects out of nothing, using no energy, in two seconds.

i will also add that 3d printing can improve and its likely that there'll be some really interesting results from it, it's just that it's important to understand we're talking about the physical world here. these are chemical and physical processes and so the limiting factor is reality. you start hitting real walls when it comes to things like 'well i want this chemical process to go faster and be better, but with no heat' or 'well i want high quality material for low enough prices that people can 3d print at home'. we are quite used to the rapid advances in the world of computers, but remember that for most technology people think 'oh we're gonna be able to do amazing things' and then it just grinds to a halt because of real physical limitations to what they wanted to do.

one last thing to add is that the point of the technology is for manufacturing certain kinds of things well. it's not for manufacturing 'at home', that's not the goal for most of the research. i bring this up because it's very possible that these technologies become cheaper, more efficient, and more compact, and yet they are still not at all practical for home use, because the temperatures and lasers used might be quite dangerous, or the waste from the process is unsafe to handle, problems like that.
