I made another game review video (The Phantom Menace)

Thanks for all the feedback you guys gave me on my first review. I've been creating this one for the past week or so and I'm fairly happy with it:

There were one or two suggestions from the first thread that I didn't manage to stick to. The most obvious is that I found myself slipping into "this is the plot of the game" mode all the time, which in turn resulted in the video way too long again. I definitely intend to change the format of future reviews so that doesn't happen.

But yeah, I think I've cut down on the jump scares, silly voices and bad cropping, so thanks for those comments last time.

That was great!
Well edited and really funny. That truly was a great review.
The Phantom Menace is one of my childhood games, I myself liked the design of most of the levels really much and, the Mos Espa level was the greatest.
The jumping was fucking awful but I never really cared about that as a kid

If this doesn't get you laid, then nothing will

really liked it! actually inspired me to install a PS1 emulater (that ive since deleted already controller controls on a keyboard is awful). but yeah you keep doing them like this and i'll keep watching them! how are they doing for views?

also i dont know if you're still wanting feedback or advise but when you highlight things like the coding it would have taken for those stinkbeetle-smelling NPC's or talkings about the camera angle and rendering object #'s and set dresing in the field of view it's really interesting to get that insight.

i might be in the dorky minority but that kind of discussion of inner coding stuff in laymans terms is really interesting and for me is a much bigger hook than the youtube-humour and things popping up on screen. obv. you need that for a youtube audience but like, keep the deeper technical analysis stuff in too because it's cool

Thanks man. Yeah, I'll definitely keep the techy stuff in there. There's more to a game than the music and the gameplay, so it needs to be in the review imo.

They're doing relatively okay on views. The one I did of Haven has done better than it should, considering it's an obscure game. Lohr made a good point that people aren't really going to be searching YouTube for old or unusual games like these so it's not great in terms of traffic. My stats say that people are sharing them round though, and clicking on them in related videos. To be honest I get much more pleasure out of reviewing these old things rather than new stuff, so I'm happy to just start low and hope that I gradually build up a much bigger audience over time.

Why did the pc version look like it had gradients?

That's because they used Direct3D on the PC to do the rendering - which also includes all sorts of shading methods that were taken for granted in the late 90s. The PSX version only drew the polygons flat, that is why there is no "depth" to anything.
The PSX was one of the first consoles that shipped with hardware dedicated to do 3D stuff, that was in the early days of 3D gaming and so a lot of features simply were missing.

definitely very stylistically similar to other videos like this as you acknowledged, but yeah, you did a great job and kept me interested even though I don't watch this sort of thing too often. your sense of humor seems to work really well in this format.

yeah when i first saw the 16:54 i didn't expect to watch the whole thing in one go, so you must be doing something right. or maybe i was just really bored haha.

i think i already told you my thoughts on facebook didn't i? solid approach to humour, couple bits made me laugh like the car key unlock noise on the pod racer, fun video effects in general, yeah, keep these up man. YOU'RE ON TO SOMETHING.

though yeah, again, that length is something to keep working against, i reckon you'll find it easier to condense things the more you make, i mean i remember when i started deathbulge a lot of people were critiquing the length of the comics but over time i'd like to think i got the hang of cutting out unnecessary filler.
