Yeeesssssssssss! The Gothic games are fucking amazing. I even liked 4, despite it being 200% different from the others. Gothic III was really buggy but super epic and a lot of fun. Honestly though, I agree, Gothic II was the best.

Have you played Risen?

My list in no specific order but honestly Arx Fatalis is probably my favourite game of all time:
  • Arx Fatalis
  • Gothic I/II
  • Risen I/II
  • Clive Blarker's Undying
  • F.E.A.R
  • System Shock 2
  • American McGee's Alice
  • Pagan: Ultima VIII
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Blood

There's a lot more... but I'm pretty happy with that list.

I have no idea how ocarina would play to a first timer in 2014.

a lot of n64 games I missed at the time only to try out way later have just felt really dated to me

SS2 is awesome

I agree about N64 games. A lot of the N64/PS1-era action games are hard for me to enjoy, including my favorites as a kid like Goldeneye. Some RPGs are a bit different though. I think Ocarina might play OK.

This game was amazing. I remember asking for it for Christmas from my mum and when she went out into town on like the 20th of December, I found where she'd hidden it, carefully unwrapped it, played it for two hours and wrapped it back up again. Definitely on my list when I actually make one.

I've never been able to get into baldur's gate or any D&D based RPGs.

it's a shame because I'm sure when it clicks it's a fantastic experience, it just looks so in-depth.

I just cant get to grips with controlling and developing 6 characters at a time.

anyway my top ten

super mario world (agreed with lohr, as good as a platformer gets)
SNES super mario kart (i would have sunk more hours in to this than maybe anything else ever)
GTA san andreas (IV and V are probably technically better games but i've never connected with a game more)
red dead redemption (this game was so good it is outrageous)
a link to the past (i have not played the N64 games for some reason)
super mario 64 (completely changed the way i viewed video games)
goldeneye (defined games for an entire generation. no one knew games could be this good)
sonic 3 and knuckles (maybe not as good a game as all the other stuff but i have nothing but good memories from this game)
duke nukem 3D (i even used to make maps and mods for this)
super metroid (chronically underrated game)

I keep meaning to go back and replay Super Metroid, when I was a kid I really liked it but I got stuck somewhere and gave it away, and then when I asked for it back the kid wouldn't give it to me

i love it even now. especially playing on the hardest difficulty. the movement is basically perfect, but the enemies destroy you in ~2 hits so its aslways exciting. the orb of the undead might be the most stressful fun ive ever had in a game

-- dave i did play tribes ascend for a while but i never got particularly good at it. from what i hear the game is basically dead on its arse though :/

also you should definitely give the top down dnds a go. something like icewind dale can be prretty straightforward bows on the weak chars and then you can just select all > attack its only tough right at the start. besides you dont need to roll with 6 chars, you can just build 1-3 and get through fine.
