Starting Point Request Thread

Had no idea how to title this thread. Basically, use this thread when you're interested in something, like a musical artist or genre, a hobby, etc, but you don't know where to start.

For instance, I was reading the "5 Bands" thread, and I've wanted to get into Pulp and Fugazi for a while. Where do I begin with those?

Try the "5 Bands" thread. I think someone in there listens to them.

Fugazi:
Repeater is their first album and probably the most famous, and I think it captures the essence of the band pretty well. In on the Kill Taker is my favorite, though, and that's the one that really got me into Fugazi. someone else is probably going to say The Argument, which is great too.

I've wanted to get into sculpting. I've seen lots of people us Sculpey, and I've read up on urethane casting (to make duplicates of your original sculpture) but like... does anybody have any really good places to learn techniques?

I got the tools, and I've played around, learning what's good for hair and other textures. Good some good wire brushes and really fine scoops and etc.

Anybody have any good tips, tricks of the trade, etc? ResourceS?

Cool.

haha Pulp!

Well, I guess like everyone you start with Common People that's their most obvious hit. I didn't really check them out for a while, I thought okay that's one cool song that's all I need from them. But then I heard Disco 2000 and thought hey that's great too! And then I heard Babies which is hilariously easy and fun to play and sing on guitar. Also a great track (which is always important).

Someone then randomly sent me all the songs from the HITS best of album, the album's in chronological order, which is nice. Do You Remember The First Time? is my favourite out of those even though it doesn't apply to me.

If you're still interested after that, or are more the sort to not buy best of albums, get their album Different Class, not only does that have both Common People and Disco 2000, it has a bunch of other great tracks too. (Though never been too fond of Mis-Shapes). That said, my favourite album is His N Hers, but yeah if you're just trying to get into them. I'd go with DC first.

I think Jarvis' voice takes a bit of an acquired taste, but once you get past that, or learn to not take it seriously. You can really appreciate them.

I have done a bit for my art course. I wish I was better at it but you so need to have the right sort if mind to work in 3D, and I have pretty bad slavish awareness.
I youtubed for HOURS and that's how I learned. I also went into the local art supply store and made a friend there who was so helpful. Bit I never made anything good.
My hot flatmate on the other hand, used to have his own studio where he sculpted, and managed to make enough money to live off it, he was in a few magazines and had a few exhibitions and his stuff is incredibly. I could ask for hints or tricks of the trade, but I'm am too scared to talk to him because of the sex appeal.
I'm not really helping, but I'd love to see how this turns out?!

Most Fugazi albums except End Hits are a good start.

I want to get into playing some hardcore Melodeon, but there's no teachers around for it and I haven't found many resources online.
I basically saw this video of a busker in san francisco and became obsessed with it:

Thanks Rabid/Dan/Andres! Yeah, the first Pulp song I heard was "Common People", but the one that got stuck in my head, and got me interested, was when The Venture Bros, which had never used any music but their own, ended the fourth season finale with "Like A Friend". Its a really good scene.

Also Aleister Crowley isn't worth the read.

what is this detached, ironic, jaded sort of one-liner schtick? is this like the 'hip' thing that people do now?

hey the AV Club has like a regular feature where they do this called Primer
it's all about movies, music, etc but there's a lot of good stuff

http://www.avclub.com/features/primer/
stay away from the one on metal tho, it's really superficial. they could have easily done like 10 separate Primers on 10 different genres of metal

i just looked at the av club one on metal just for the sake of it.... it's pretty ridiculous.

i kind of think the guy who wrote it is just friends with anaal nathrakh, and it was all some weird elaborate ploy for him to put them over

i also disagree strongly with their primer on progressive rock.

but i guess music is difficult to write about, because some kvlt guy will always show up and tell you youre not being kvlt enough.

their thing on alan moore was good though. i agree that the watchmen is overrated.

the thing on neil gaiman seemed good but i havent read much of his stuff beyond sandman
