Saw it today too! The villain looked goofy but I think the movie was awesome.

I dug it a lot. Definitely my favourite Batman movie since TDK, and it surpasses it in some important ways. Pattinson is probably my favourite on-screen Batman (although Bale still has him beat as Bruce Wayne), and I loved how it was actually a detective story and how the “I’M VENGEANCE” shit from the trailers is only where the character starts off, and how the grimdark bullshit gets interrogated throughout the movie. Like it’s a super dark movie but it’s so dark that it wraps back around to being camp, which owns. Gorgeous visuals and score, too.

I liked it, cinematography was gorgeous, Matt Reeves films always look amazing and this one is no exception. Gotham actually felt like Gotham which is so fucking important when making a Batman film, as much as I love The Dark Knight I would argue that Gotham in that movie just feels like any old city but Matt Reeves did a good job capturing the look and feel of the place, the characters all feel like a product of living in such a crime infested shit hole, especially Batman. I liked how he was Batman for pretty much 95% of the film, fully embracing it and not even humouring the idea of being of any use as Bruce Wayne, at the end of the day it's a sad obsession for him and Pattinson did a decent job showing that more isolated, unhinged and obsessive side to Bruce's psyche, yet still able to adapt and change into someone more heroic and less vengeful by the films end.
Making the Riddler into a creepy zodiac killer inspired antagonist was an excellent direction to take the character and Paul Dano was a perfect casting choice. I just wish he was in the film a bit more, I think too much of it was dedicated to Falcone and the whole informant sub plot that I didn't care about. I think I may have expected too much from this film, I was expecting a big twist like the Riddler leading Batman to discovering the the Court of Owls or something given his motive for exposing all the corruption in Gotham, would definitely like to see something like that in a potential sequel though it looks like they might be leaning more towards a No Mans Land inspired direction instead. Also I think this film might just have the best Batman theme ever; Honestly, I actually think it's kinda perfect. The way the horns just keep building up more and more, like the sense of dread criminals feel knowing THE BATMAN is coming for them, getting closer and closer but it still has that dark, heroic JUSTICE undertone that just sounds so unrecognizably Batman and I fucking love it. But yeah good movie, would probably watch again. |
nothing will ever beat the Dark Knight, but I would have to say that this is my second favorite. Robert Pattinson is the best batman so far, his character is a bit damaged and unstable which I feel is necessary when characterizing a guy who dresses up like a bat.
The cinematography was amazing, it really gave the batman feel I haven't felt since Tim Burton's. |
